The unit came with a carpet cleaning solution. It had an oddly specific proportion on the label (113 ml per 3785 ml of hot tap water). I just added a few drops. Turning the unit on was easy, just one button to press. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. The nozzle has a trigger on the end that starts the spray. At first I couldn't see the spray but it started after a few presses. It also came out lower than I was expecting but easy to adjust. My strategy was spray, wait and brush. You can see the water being sucked right back! I went over the affected area a few times and could immediately see a difference in color. One thing I didn't realize until later is that they recommend vacuuming the rug thoroughly before starting. This made sense since I would keep gathering up my dogs fur as I scrubbed but the fur would not be sucked in and start accumulating on the brush. I do wish it would suck the fur and debris into the waste container, but it's not too hard to vacuum before starting.
