Sand Land has been a very nice surprise this year, and a great tribute to Akira Toriyama- the Japanese Manga Artist and Character Designer who created Dragonball and worked on video game series like Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon and many others. He passed away earlier this year, so it’s cool to see Sand Land come out this year, which based on his Manga of the same name. This is an Unreal Engine 5 game, it actually runs at native 4k 60fps on PS5 (according to Digital Foundry Direct episode 162). I specifically bought this version over PC, despite my desktop being more powerful than the PS5 because the Steam version is riddled with shader compilation and traversal stutter. It runs perfectly on PlayStation 5 though, I recommend this version over PC. The game reminds me of something that you would play during the 6th or 7th console generation, it’s a fun adventure game, set in an open world with lots of cool vehicle combat. You get a tank not too far into the game but you slowly are able to build more cool mechs and other vehicles. I would classify this as a AA game, it has a decent budget and good voice acting and cinematics. Just nothing as crazy as what you would see in a PlayStation Studios game where they spend millions on expensive cutscenes that arguably aren’t necessary (at least not at such a high fidelity), this is one of the bad habits (imo) that has caused game development cycles to reach 6-8 years for a single game. I found this game to be a refreshing return to how games used to be, it’s doing a lot of things and manages to do a pretty good job at many of them, but it’s not trying to GREAT at any of them (and that is OK!). I honestly wish we would see more games like this, it’s very enjoyable and you can get many hours out of this game. I’m 20 hours in and not even close to the end yet. I recommend it and am glad Bandai Namco and ILCA made this! Read more

Sandland is an incredibly unique RPG set in a unique environment. Its graphics, character/world design, and unique gameplay make it an absolute killer RPG. The fact that it felt like something completely new in a world of reboots, remakes, ports, and remasters made it even more refreshing. Its difficulty was on the easier side on Normal mode, but that was just fine for me. Honestly, I cannot believe it has not received more praise. I truly believe that this game will be looked back upon as a masterpiece and certainly a gift to the world from Akira Toriyama right before his passing. If you’re on the fence, give this game a shot. It was well worth the money at full-price, and is even better at its current pricing. Read more

I had no idea this was an anime. I bought it for enjoying the demo. But the game itself lacks the depth of the anime but replaced it with a good gameplay loop. The game is easy once you unlock enough gameplay features and pretty good. They added some extra things mentioned in the anime but not fully explained. This game does that and after playing Diama dlc this game could have been used for it. It’s a good simple game based on an anime that is fun even never seeing it. Because half way in it’s all explained and side quests become brutal. For $50 and 27 hours with some new things to locate you get your money’s worth. It helps the game is not overly reliant on anime tropes and actually had real thought put into enriching the world and the story is a modified version of the anime. Now I am seeing it for $27 used I can recommend it. When I learned it was an anime game I didn’t want to review it. But now it’s been long enough. The game is easy I mean really easy I am a gamer so it’s easy for me. But it’s a nice introduction for an open world newcomer. I like it it can get boring but never too the point of disinterested since it’s got mechs to ride. A nice game for a 3 day weekend and return if used. Great game as a rental worth playing at least. I bought this game on a whim without any thought because it was on sale, little did I know I'd be playing Sandland over a bunch of AAA games that I was currently in the middle of. This game is surprisingly good, It really reminds me of the good ol days when games were actually games and not glorified tutorial movies. This is a game! It's fun and I'm having a great time with it. It's not perfect but It more than makes up for it with just how fun it is. Sandland also contains rpg elements, you can level up your characters and allies. You can also level up your tank! The Dragon ball art in Sandland is beautiful to look at as well. Sandland is very easy though, I always play games on normal to hard mode but I'm playing this on hard "which is the hardest difficulty I can choose atm" and it's still quite easy so I'd also recommend this for game for kids. I'm an adult in my early 40s and my wife was watching me play and she was totally enjoying watch play Sandland, she said she really likes it and wants to play it after I'm done with it. Great game, I highly recommend Sandland!!! Read more

The game is fantastic. If you are a Dragonball fan, Toriyama's artwork will certainly be welcome and the small similarities between Sand Land's world and the Dragonball world are very fun to make out. The game in itself is fantastic - an excellent world that is tons of fun to explore and interact with, a very captivating and interesting story, and fun gameplay and combat mechanics that keep you on your toes. I was skeptical when I saw a devil kid and tanks. I was like what the heck is this?! It’s good so far and it will only get better knowing Toriyama! It was the last of his games I ordered while he was still alive. I definitely am enjoying it and can’t wait to get back to it. I have lots of other games I’m playing as well. My backlog is terrible but this game is great! If you like real time action RPG’s get it! Don’t hesitate! Read more
