I have a number of NAS devices around used for different purposes. Some for entertainment. Some for security purposes. In all cases I need a reliable drive that performs well and can handle the rigors of running 24x7x365. I have used a number of brands over the years but I believe I have now standardized on these Seagate Ironwolf NAS disks. The price is very reasonable. The capacity is flexible enough that I promise you can find the size you need. The installation is always easy and the speed and performance has never let me down. I'm very satisfied. Read more
This was my first time buying a renewed drive. I'm upgrading my media server so I was super excited waiting for the delivery. Unfortunately, the drive that came was vibrating to the point it was shaking my entire desk and when I formatted it, it sounded like nails on the chalkboard. I was very bummed to say the least. However, the exchange got here before I was even able to drop off the return and it's running like new. It's just the chance you take buying renewed / refurbished. Read more
Been running like a pro in my Synology. Seems like the quality of the restore is solid, but I can't comment on the sound level as it runs in my basement where the temperature and heat is generally agreeable to a server environment. Throughput and speed is what I'd expect from an enterprise drive with normal heat levels and a standard installation for a SATA drive. For a refurb drive, I'd say it has terrific durability- seems like it'll go for a least a few more year. Read more
I bought three of these. Two of them died within 24 hours of each other in less than a year and took out my array. Since they only have a 90 day warranty I just tossed a ton of money into the fire. Cool. Read more
I replaced an older 8TB Ironwolf HDD with this. I was able to format it with EXT4 filesystem, clone my data to it from the 8TB Ironwolf, and resize this new drive it to it's full capacity. Everything is working perfectly for now, however there was a strange clicking/grinding noise of initial boot/power up(I know HDD make noise spinning up but this sounded odd to me). I will still have to monitor it, as like many here, I am very cautious of renewed/refurbished computer components. I'll only update if the drive fails, otherwise it is working fine and was half the price so I am happy. Read more
I run a private media server and I own 10 of these now. If that doesnt speak volumes to you, well I dont know what more that I can say other than its fairly quiet, easy to install, its speed was as advertised and overall a good quality purchase. I have two more drives coming. I hope this will last me until the 40s come out OR the petabyte dvd's are released. Read more
A lot of hard drive failures are the fault of the user for not following the proper procedure. I don’t even think what I’m recommending here it’s listed on Seagate website but here we go., make sure the computer you’re using to plug in your drive is capable of staying running for the next 38 hours, initialize your drive, choose low level format, that will take between 30- 38 hours for 18 TB , it all depends on your processor, speed, and your ram, when you start moving files to your Drive, approximately every 4 TB of Data you add to the drive, you need to run this command prompt, ( must run as an administrator). CHKDSK (drive letter) : /X/F/R , you can search the command on Google, this procedure can take approximately 30- 38 hours on the first time , 25 hours the second time , also make sure the check box is checked where it says allow indexing, and every time you add more data to your drive (2-4 TB ) specially huge amount of data you need to run the CHKDSK command, do it religiously once every 6 months, even if you don’t add any more files , your hard drive will last 10 years, I have seagate hard drives still running from 2010 -2012-2014 , thank you very much Amazon and thank you Seagate for a wonderful hard drive Read more
