The Sharp Pebble Large Flattening Stone offers a unique dual-grit system (120/320) with a diamond groove pattern designed for efficiently flattening various sharpening stones, including waterstones, oil stones, and ceramic stones. Its extra-large size provides ample surface area. Made from durable silicon carbide, it aims for quick material removal on the coarse side and a finer finish on the other. This stone appears to be a robust and versatile tool for maintaining the flatness of your sharpening stones. This review represents my personal opinion and experience with this product. I recently bought the Flattening Stone from Sharp Pebble after having been very impressed with their other products. I used the FS on a small waterstone and was very happy with the results, it cleaned it up very quickly. That said, I was surprised to see that the FS has been worn down significantly. I had planned on using it on many of my older stones but realized it would be gone in no time if it wore in the manner it did with the first stone. I contacted Salma at Sharp Pebble with my concerns and she was very helpful. She explained that the FS I received must have been defective and replaced it with a new stone. The new FS arrives and worked perfectly with almost no visible wear. I would give the new FS 5 stars but because of the issues with the first stone, Iβm staying at 4 stars. Sharp Pebble is awesome. I started sharpening knives as a hobby a year ago. I read everything I could find and watched a lot of videos. As I continued to study I realized that I needed a flattening stone. I had purchased some sharp pebble sharpening stones. They seemed good so I bought their flattening stone as well. When I started using the FS I noticed there was a lot of gray slush. As a beginner I thought this is the way it is supposed to be. So I continued to use the stone until this month (January 2026). During this time I used the pencil grid method to check that my stones were flat. But also during this time I was unsuccessful at getting a really sharp edge. Again I figured that was because I was a beginner. Then one day I looked at the FS. I was worn down almost flat. The diamond pattern grooves were gone. I figured I was doing something wrong so I bought a second FS. Right from the beginning there was a lot of gray slush and it seemed to take long time to erase the pencil grid even with the coarse side. I looked at the FS and there was already noticeable wearing down of the grooves. The flattening stone is supposed to be harder than the sharpening stone. This FS is very definitely softer than any of my sharpening stones. This FS is worthless. I wasted a lot of time because I thought my stones were flat and that it was my technique that was bad. It took me a year to figure out that my biggest problem was this FS from Sharp Pebble. I hope this honest review saves others from wasting time. Read more
