This is the first review I have ever posted, but I do think it is necessary, if only to assuage the fears of some. I recently purchased this pillow (10 days ago, perhaps), and I am about to purchase another one. I noticed no chemical smell on it, at all, and after reading some of these reviews I went looking for the "smell" mentioned by so many. Well, once I removed my pillowcase, unzipped the manufacturer's covering, and then pressed my nose deep into the foam, I did get an odd scent. But, once I redressed it, it was hardly noticeable to me or any member of my household. I also find it so odd how past reviews span the spectrum of soft/firmness in opinion. Most low reviews were because someone found the pillow either "too hard" or "too soft". I found it even humorous, knowing full well that perception is so subjective, no one can assure that a pillow will be either to everyone. Personally, I found the density of the pillow quite perfect. Firm enough to support the weight of my head just so, while being soft enough to snuggle into. Now, this is the first memory foam anything I have purchased. And, I quite like the "new" or "advanced" formulations of it. Some reviewers liked the older versions because they actually kept the shape of your head imprinted. But, this is the very reason I never wanted to buy memory foam in the past. I simply hated the idea and/or feel of lying into a foam cast of my head (or body with mattresses) every night. This pillow, as most new memory foam, cradles the shape of your head every night, while popping back into shape softly. I love this, the feeling of my head sinking into a cloud every night because I am both a back and side sleeper. If my pillow kept the shape of my head while lying in ONE position, I would not be able to roll from my back to my side without waking up and grabbing the "other position pillow". I hurt my back when I was in my mid-20s, never to recover my pre-injury condition. I now have degenerative disk disease, with my L-5 vertebra scraping with my L-4, bone-on-bone, and one of my neck vertebrae is going out now, too. Sleeping comfortably and safely, overall, is hugely important to me. So, take my advice, and try the pillow out for yourselves. Make your up your own mind because your opinion will surely be as different and unique as you and your tastes are. One last thing, this pillow won't be for everyone, but my experience was exceptional. I lived with neck and shoulder pain (not to mention the obvious back pain), and woke up with a headache every morning. After a few days of sleeping on this pillow, my pain level was substantially decreased, and I stopped waking up w/headaches. I let my husband use it for a night (the second pillow is for him), and the difference I felt the next morning (used regular pillow) was astounding to me. I awoke in my past painful condition. Perfect balance between softness and support. I love the queen size which means no pulling and tugging a smaller pillow around as I shift positions in the middle of the night. My neck is sensitive to too much pressure so this is the perfect balance. It was a tad firmer than I needed so I simply sat on it for a few hours while I watched a movie which helped to soften it up just a bit more. Now it's perfect. There was a slight (hardly noticeable) smell when it was first opened but after one day, it wasn't noticeable at all. It's been a few months since I purchased this pillow and I still love it and plan on having it for a very long time. I think it's a reasonable price to pay for a good quality pillow with memory foam. It's not a cheap spongy foam that I often saw at other stores for the same price when shopping for one locally. I'm glad I checked Amazon and found this one. Not a bad pillow for the price point. The quality seems pretty solid thus far but long term is still unknown. These pillows have to be a certain size. This means many people will find them either too small or too big. The pillow has a 'trough' in the middle and has a ridge on the top and bottom. One ridge is small the other a bit larger. At first I thought the pillow was too small for me since I was use to using 2 pillows and both were pretty large. The whole idea of this pillow is to keep your spine and head at an even plane. The ridge conforms to your neck arch. Your back is thus flat on the bed and your neck is curved over the ridge on the pillow. Your head nestles itself into the trough in the middle of the pillow. This is why it seems a bit small to me; the trough puts your head pretty close to the level of the bed. This is what these contour pillows are suppose to do. You can choose which ridge is best for you. I usually use the larger ridge since it supports my neck better. Overall this pillow seems like a good product at a good price. The material seems stable enough and so far (only 1 month) it has kept it's shape and form. You will need to get use to this type of pillow if you've never used one before. It takes some time to get use to a minimal pillow compared to my big ones. It works, my neck is not at a crazy angle and this is made for either side sleeping or back sleeping. This would be my 4th Sleep Innovations Memory Foam pillow, spanning well over a decade of purchases. I've loved these pillows for their high quality and high density foam that gave lots of support and perfect firmness. Every 4 or 5 years I notice the foam has lost it's support and I get a sore neck, and so I happily order a new one. So that was what I just did once again. Unfortunately, this pillow is NOTHING like their past pillows. It is cheap low density foam just like every other cheap foam pillow on the market. It's actually LESS supportive than my 4 year old version, but yet I still gave it a chance just in case I was missing something. Nope, less than a week in and I have a sore neck. Sad to see such an established company destroy a great product. Read more
