I've had a Z-wave house for over a decade and I'm already using a Zooz 800 dongle so I ordered this guy as a spare. It's a real pain transitioning from one dongle to another so I didn't actually get to fully put this guy to use yet, but I'm still pretty impressed. First off, it was immediately recognized by both Ubuntu and Windows 11 with no extra drivers needed. A nice plus. I was able to pass it through to Home Assistant using an HA Install on a VM on Proxmox and HA saw the adapter with no issues. Also very nice was the inclusion of a pretty generous extension cord in the box. If you've been around Zwave for a while, you know that the USB port itself can actually cause interference with the radio and it's recommended to move it away from the computer. For my current setup, I had to order extra cables to do that so it's a refreshing change of pace to see a manufacturer going the extra mile. The dongle itself is the typical build quality you'd expect from Sonoff, nice smooth plastic with no edges and no slop in the USB port or antenna hinge. Feels like a premium build. One thing I did try to do with this was get it working on the new (as of 2026/02) ESPHome option of Zwave over network, using an ESP32 PoE adapter. I had no luck so seems that this device may not work with that just yet. I was able to get my other adapter working with no issues so not sure what the deal is there. End of the day, I expect this adapter will work just fine with your Home Assistant setup. It's got a high quality feel and this brand is known to produce some good quality stuff. Sonoff Z-Wave dongle. Sonoff has historically made great Zigbee dongles - and now they finally have a great Z-Wave dongle. There is a lot to love about this ZWave controller. Unlike many of the incumbents, Sonoff decided to do several things right the first time. It’s based on the latest 800 series EFR32ZG23 chip, so it supports ZWave LR and benefits from good firmware support provided by Si Labs. It comes with a USB extension cable, which is mandatory for radio dongles. Radios can be absolutely clobbered by the RF emissions of the USB 3.0 ports on your computer or Raspberry Pi if you plug them in directly. It comes with a proper 2db antenna, which is required to get the full performance for ZWave Long-Range. In theory this will also improve the battery life of direct-connected battery powered ZWave devices since they don’t have to use as much energy to be heard or to listen. It’s a nice form-factor with a well-shielded case. I’ve tested it with Home Assistant ZWave JS and so far it works well. (You need HA 2025.12.2 or later for auto-detect to work.) This is a viable less expensive alternative to the “best” ZWave controller on the market right now - and at less than half the price, the real-world performance is essentially the same. ZWave by its nature is not as open and flexible firmware-wise as Zigbee, so unfortunately it can’t be flashed as a Zniffer since it’s a “retail” device. This is not Sonoff’s fault - just the nature of proprietary ZWave. Sonoff has historically provided great customer support and firmware updates for the their products, so it’s nice to have a new trusted brand in the ZWave controller space.
