Wanted to add my 5 star vote to the reviews to bolster the overall rating. This is one of my favorite psychological thrillers and definitely one of Matt McConaughey's best movies. IMDb describes this simply as "A lawyer defending a wealthy man begins to believe his client is guilty of more than just one crime." Starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe and William H Macy with cameos from a host of other good celebrities, this movie is what I tend to describe as a slow burn. Mick Haller (McConaughey) plays a savvy street smart lawyer who rolls around town in an old black Lincoln Town Car, defending individuals with poorer reputations than the average citizen. He is manipulated into defending Louis Roulet (Phillippe) on an assault charge. As the plot thickens Mick begins to suspect Louis of being guilty even though he is capable of seeming very innocent. There is not much more I can share without spoilers. There are some great twists in the plot especially towards the end and the overall effect brings great resolution to a seemingly impossible situation. Rated R for some sensual adult scenes, language, drug use and violence, I would rate this more of a PG-13. Common Sense media rates it 16+ from adults and kids rate it 14+. It is a quality movie that can be watched more than once because the character development and acting are solid and the plot has enough depth but is not complicated. Read more

This is one of my favorite movies. Mick Haller is my all time favorite character that Matthew McConaughey has played. He's the absolute criminal lawyer, with his Lincoln as his Los Angeles office. The story moves along as you are presented with the facts. Haller is one of the best in his field. He knows his craft and is wary of the advice his father had given to him. To watch out for the innocent client. Things happen. I wasn't really ready for the ending. Michael Pena is outstanding in his character. I was amazed at how he started and what 8 years in San Quentin can do to someone. Ryan Phillippe was also the ultimate innocent client. Why did he have to lie? William H. Macy was Mick's grand investigator. How far would his investigation have to go to save Mick's client? I was especially happy to see Michael Pare in this one, even though he was a wrung out character. I watch this movie over and over. It's such a grand story and well put together. The music is a welcome character, too! Read more
