Basically the only criticisms I have that would keep me from considering this knife as perfect, something that is imho natural and easily attainable is that it did not come razor shaving sharp and the sheath is also nylon. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty darn sharp, but I've often received knives from spyderco, cold steel, kabar and others that are absolutely razor sharp and literally ready to shave with. Tops should up their game in this regard. Now the sheath. It's perfectly adequate, it works, it's not a cheap material, BUT COME ON! This is a premium knife of remarkable quality. It deserves a custom quality kydex sheath, and seriously, if someone is looking at a knife at this price range, they're going to be willing to fork over a little extra for it. Given that a few tops knives have kydex sheaths, newer ones, like operator 7, el chete, I think Tops is getting the message. All that being said, I can't bring myself to take a star off. I took the knife out of its plastic bag, absolutely demolished the box it came in, and went in search of dead branches to cut, and cut it did. No gloves, factory edge and while it didn't quite outdo a dedicated machete (or el Chete) for that matter, this is a big mean knife that is comfortable and can do it all. Would you want to do it all with it? No. Can you? Absolutely. As far as I'm concerned tops has done it again and this knife is a winner. Just wish I had a kydex sheath and could open carry it, but I suppose it would be a tad much for opening office mail. Read more
This knife is great. The first thing I did was go out to my yard and begin clearing a fence which had been overgrown with vines. This beast made this job as much fun as it could be. I was cutting through vines as thick as my thumb with a single swing. Sometimes, it took more than a few blows depending on the angle, where on the blade it hit, what resistance etc. Lighter in the hand than it appears (well balanced).Very little hand fatigue (I was wearing gloves) and no hotspots noticed. It was a blast. Afterwards, I took the knife cleaned it n the sink, dried and oiled it. A couple of strokes on a ceramic rod and it was sharper then when I got it. It was as new. I am not technically savvy, but I agree with another reviewer that the grind is flat such as one may find on a hatchet or other hacking tool. Despite this, it cuts well in finer jobs especially if one uses the choil and grips up and uses a pushing motion. I plan to pack this knife when carrying multiple tools may not be possible. It does the job of both an axe, machete and large knife. Like all muti-use tools however, there are compromises. No, you do not want to use this to take down a tree, but it does more things well than most. Love the sheath with two pockets. One for fire kit and another for a smaller knife or stone for me. If you were to put me on a desert island tomorrow and tell me I could only have one knife, this would be it. Read more
What an awesome knife! My first Tops purchase, though I've known some SO folk ( SEALs ) who swear by them. It's a big ole thing, but it balances right on that finger choil at the base of the blade, so it really handles like a much smaller knife; of course, the choil lets you choke up a bit for finer jobs. It's a fine chopper, about like a small hatchet, and you can sweep more small limbs off at a time, kinda like a short, stout machete, but this guy takes a nicer edge than most machetes, because the steel is harder. It came paper cutting sharp, but I gave it a few swipes on the medium, then fine sticks on my Sharpmaker, and it got way better. I sure wouldn't shave my face with it, but it shaves arm hair just fine. The grip feels real good, not too big, and I have small hands. Some folks don't like the choil in the grip, I may sand a bit of the Micarta off the front of the spur at the back edges of it, but on the whole, I'm glad it's there. I'm very impressed by the Armageddon, enough so that I intend to get another Tops fixed blade soon, one of their 4-5 inch models. If you are looking for a really high quality BIG knife, and don't want to pay custom prices, this is one of the best! Read more
