Instructions could be improved.

DavidJune 28, 2024

Not withstanding that the institutions need improvements, the sharpening ability is excellent and I gave it a 5 star. The rolling part rolls without any issues. The grit sharpener side does its job with a good balance of metal removal but not too aggressive. The smoother removal side does its function too. I am not too sure about the strop but I used it for what it’s worth. The whole process was fairly quick for normal desire for quick processing. I finished two knives in about 8 minutes. My only issue was with the instructions. I am a novice at sharpening knives and would have appreciated a few comments on which angle to use. I opted for the 20 degree thinking that it would sharpen the knives with less metal required to be removed and less time to sharpen. I also found the magnets sufficiently strong enough to hold even the smaller knives. You just have to take your time and not apply too much pressure. I could probably say that for all the knives. Take your time and make the tool do the work, not your hand and arm strength. I also would have liked to find out what the little eraser is for. It wasn’t even mentioned. I’ll have to do an internet search to see what comes up. There was one typo in the instructions that is fairly important. It uses the word, “Attack,” when what was intended was, “Attach.” I do really like this sharpener despite the improvement needed in the instructions. Read more

Simple use and professional results

DamonJuly 25, 2024

This is my first experience with a rolling sharpener and I wish I had tried it sooner. This is a really nice kit that is easy to use and gives professional results in just a few minutes. The instructions are clear and simple to understand even if you've never used a rolling sharpener before. The magnet has 2 angles to choose from depending on what kind of knife you're sharpening. The rolling sharpener has a sharpening end and a honing end. It also comes with a leather strap for finishing. I got really good results on this knife which was a favorite at one time but hadn't been used by anyone in a while because it was very dull after being used to cut some paper. The before and after shots show how well it worked on this knife and it's back to being a favorite. I recommend it, especially if you are paying to have someone sharpen your knives or you have dull knives that you're using at risk of injury because they are dull. Read more

Excellent Rolling Knife Sharpener

Tried&TestedJuly 4, 2024

This rolling knife sharpening kit is awesome. It arrived very nicely packaged and boxed and would be great for gifting. The roller and block are beautifully made and quite weighty. The block has rubber stoppers to protect your bench and help prevent sliding. The magnetic ends hold the knife in place securely. There is a leather piece and a wooden block. The instructions for the leather strop aren't clear so you might want to search how to use that correctly. It also came with an eraser, not sure what that is for. I have a sharpening stone, sharpening steel, pull-through sharpener, and now this rolling sharpener. My pull-through sharpener that I have been using for years makes my blades bumpy and I can't get them smooth. For the other 2, I can't hold an angle correctly. So this block, which sets the correct angle, is perfect and the roller is so simple to use. I would advise watching some videos online that show how to use it easily as the instructions sheet doesn't tell you much if you have never done this before. The longer, thinner blades bend a bit so you have to be careful but overall I love this sharpener for an even, smooth finish. I have quite a few old knives to bring back up to speed and this is perfect. Read more

Decent rolling knife-sharpener

Luke C.June 29, 2024

The good: The 15-degree and 2-degree angles on the magnet block seem to be cut at the proper angles, and the magnets (for holding the knife in place) are fairly strong (not as strong as I'd expected they'd be, though). And the roller actually rolls really smoothly -- it's got a decent wait to it, and very good rolling action. Both of those pieces also use nice wooden and metal materials. Also, there are a few bonus items: A leather strop (which features a very thin layer of leather over a nice little piece of wood, for further honing/cleaning your knife blade); a small cleaning cloth (similar to the type of dust cloth you'd get with a pair of glasses); and a two-sided pencil eraser (I'm not sure why this is in the box -- if it's just for fun, for erasing pencil marks, or if it's meant to be used in the knife-sharpening process in some mysterious way that's never mentioned in the instructions. Anyway, it's a pretty good little eraser, with one side for erasing regular pencil marks and the other side a gritterier/sanded style of eraser for erasing colored pencil and pen marks. So I'm sure that'll come in handy for, well, erasing things. I'll probably give it to my kids). And, finall, but most importantly: After running some of my knives through the rolling-sharpener, rolling-honer, and leather strop steps, my knives are a bit sharper. The not so good: Although significantly cheaper than some of the premium brands that make this style of sharpener, this set is a bit more expensive than versions of this style of sharpener I've seen. And although it does sharpen -- I'm not convinced that this style of sharpener is as good as a traditional sharpening block or steel, it's a finicky with different sized knives (my pocket knife if too small to easily use with it; while some of my chefs knives are too big without stacking the magnet block or roller on top of more pieces of wood to try and get the height right, etc.) and takes a lot of rolls to make much progress.... And I'm not crazy about the "Toptzon" branding they put on every element -- it'd be classier if they hadn't put their logo so largely and prominently on everything. I also have a feeling the leather strop won't last very long -- the wood part of it is good, but the leather element is a paper-thin sheet of leather that's going to wear out quickly. Also: The nice gift box currently shown in the product photo is not the box this set actually arrives in (it comes in a perfectly fine cardboard box, but not a box that's necessarily gift-ready or that would be great for long-term storage or display).
