Tormented Souls

Tormented Souls is such a fantastic indie survival horror game. It's not perfect by any means but for an indie title it's probably one of the best survival horror titles you can get from the indie market if you're looking for a more traditional horror game. To keep this brief I feel as though this game is about as close as we'll get to a new Silent Hill game or at least until indie devs decide to start making horror games inspired more so by that franchise as opposed to Resident Evil (which by the way I love both RE and SH). However I do have some small issues with the game. First while there is a dodging mechanic you're likely to get hit 9 times out of 10 since most of the enemies have projectile based attacks. This wouldn't have been an issue if you had some i-frames to deal with that. Second there's only one boss in the game. Sadly that does make the game go by a little bit faster but in the defense of the dev team as far as I can tell this was their first go at making games. Lastly there's not many post game unlocks nor are there other difficulties or modes. I was kinda hoping there would be harder modes to go through and maybe some really cool weapons and costumes to unlock. As of writing this review under the game's current patch there is an additional puzzle that let's you get one new weapon and you will find a new costume in the game as well. However other than that not a whole lot to keep most people coming back for more at the moment. Tormented Souls shines though its cryptic puzzles, unique weapons, limited ammo and resources as well its amazing soundtrack. Honestly The music alone is worth the recommendation for this game. If you're a fan of games such as Silent Hill 2 or Resident Evil, then Tormented Souls is a must-play for you! It brings back memories of many of my beloved horror games from the PS2 era! I thoroughly enjoyed the puzzles, the dark and gritty atmosphere, the captivating story, and the fixed camera angles. I finished the game in just a few days and cherished every moment! Game is really fun and has old school horror vibe (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame) style. Atmosphere of the game is really great, enemies are cool but not big of a deal. Story is really simple and basic, character model and shooting system are kind of rough and outdated. Overall a great horror game for a small studio, the story is really short and doesn't have any replay value to try to play again, should be $20 to $25 max. Read more

Saw this game in a video clip on Facebook and said to myself this looks interesting. After buying and playing a few hours, I can say that this stays true to how old school, PS1 survival horror this game is. With it's wonky tank controls used with the D-pad, or even full 3D movement on the analog. No need to change settings, just your thumb placement. It even goes beyond staying true even to the point of having deliberate, cheesy, low budget voiceovers. The creatures are well detailed and show a sign of terror, but their AI also shows it's age. The environments are extremely well detailed, to the point of triple A level. I was relatively surprised at how well design the background was. The lighting and camera angles borrow both from Resident Evil 1,2,3, as well as Silent Hill 1,2,3. With stationary cameras facing one direction, while in others, have a camera facing you from the floor while twisting as you walk. Puzzles are very well thought out, and sometimes left me stuck for a long time. I haven't finished this game, but can certainly say I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It's weird to see this kind of old school game bring such a refreshing feeling to the genre. Read more

A very slow but kind of fun game if you're into puzzles and some shooting in horror settings. But the implementation of the character movements are horrible. - Why change camera angles so often? You need to change directions all the time and you'll get lost a lot. - Why not assign arrow buttons to quick weapon selection? You need to go into a menu to swap weapons. Many other annoyances (like the limited chances for saving progress) that would make me reduce this to one star but I'll leave it at that. Read more
