Treasury of American Pen-and-Ink Illustrations...A great find!!!

This by chance was found on the Amazon Dot Com Nation as I checked over someone who really liked this book...but was new to pen/ink and had a hard time accepting this book for trying to master the art of pen/ink drawing...I was lucky to review what I saw and ordered the book without hesitation...It's a great reference book and has much about the styles and illustrations during this time period (1881-1938). What a great find...!! Some wonderful history runs through each illustrated page...I'm still submerged in reviewing some of these pen and ink artists within these pages then surf the internet to find out more of said artist. Great book! One I will treasure for many years. Read more

Drawings are beautifully rendered and have good to excellent resolution consistently. I was pleasantly surprised for the affordable pricebut I ordered a usedbook in good condition. Get it! ★★★☆☆

Fine, but not terribly necessary

As a fan of old pen and ink drawings I had high hopes for this book; it’s got its pros and cons, but overall I don’t think that I would recommend it; doing a little research and searching images on-line will easily yield better results than what you can find in this book. Being a fan of books I will be the first to say that a collection of digital images does not compare well to a quality printed and bound edition, but neither is this particular publication a great example of a book. The images are not particularly well reproduced, likely scanned and reprinted from earlier publications now in the public domain. The paper and printing quality are also rather lacking, if they had been of a better quality it would have gone some way to improving the presentation. I would have preferred it if the images had been printed at a larger size and on better paper, the cover image is twice the size as the reproduction inside the book and looks quite good; some of the pictures are too small a scale to be fully appreciated. At the price I know that I shouldn’t have really expected much better. Except that for a very similar price I just picked up a recently published reproduction of several of Sergio Toppi's works that has excellent reproductions, hard cover, glossy pages, and a greater page count... So it can be done really well. On the positive side this book does showcase a good number and variety of artists (1-4 images per), some few that I am not yet familiar with, and the selection of art itself is an excellent example of the some of the best of the period. I’ll use this book as a jumping off point to explore some new (old) pen and ink art. Read more
