Worth the $99 price.

It works very well... so far. It's only been a couple of days. Easy to use. The included cords aren't the best quality if you're more serious about archiving old media like I am. I might upgrade the cords eventually, but this will suffice as is for now. Worth $99 for sure. Read more

He Thought His Past Was Safe on Obsolete Media, He Was Wrong!

We were at a celebration of life, well afterwards at a Mexican restaurant, and my husband was in the middle of being thrilled that they had homemade Jamaica when his brother casually drops "do you remember that video from the trip to Italy?" My husband nearly choked on his drink and went white. Apparently there exists VHS evidence of a trip that I have only ever heard carefully edited versions of. I needed that tape. His brother dug it out, thank god it wasn't Betamax, and this doesn't speak to my husband's age at all, he was using VHS retro style. Yeah right. We bought our first converter which, because apparently neither of us reads product descriptions, turned out to just convert to HDMI output. No saving, no keeping, no rewatching at will. I looked at my husband and said "No. No no no. I am going to show this video at your funeral." So that is how we arrived at this wonderful little device. And wonderful it is. You plug in your VCR, connect the cables, most of which are included, pop in a USB drive or SD card, and hit record. No computer needed, no software, no drivers, no degree in video engineering. It just works. It even comes with a remote control, which is one of those features you don't think you need until you're sitting across the room and need to pause, rewind, or start recording without getting up. The fact that you can save straight to USB or SD card is everything. And the built in 4 inch screen means you don't even need a TV. Some videos you don't just watch once. Some videos you take into a dark closet at midnight with this little screen glowing in your hands, cackling to yourself because your husband, for reasons he still cannot explain, is blocking off the Trevi Fountain with what appears to be police do not cross tape. And then the camera pans and there's actual Polizia Municipale just watching the whole thing go down. Some videos you save for very special occasions. Like eulogies. That little screen is also perfectly good enough to preview what you're capturing. Good enough to make out the details of my husband's friend's bright red face after squatting over an Italian hole in the floor toilet for ten minutes, yes those exist, before someone told him the campground also had normal ones. If you want a bigger view it has HDMI output so you can connect it to a TV and share the humiliation with a wider audience. Now let's talk about quality expectations. The source material is VHS. This device is not going to turn your home video into Avatar. What it does is faithfully capture exactly what's on the tape, and if what's on the tape is shaky handheld footage of questionable decisions in 1990s Italy, that's exactly what you're going to get in beautiful digital clarity. It records up to 1080p, handles both NTSC and PAL, and the files save cleanly without any glitches or sync issues. I didn't plan on spending more than twenty dollars on this, but memories like these are worth more than whatever this cost. And now that we know it works, we've already dug out a stack of MiniDV tapes from our old camcorder that are next in line. I'm also genuinely thrilled that we kept our old VCR despite debating every single year whether to throw it away. Actually, not just yet. I just realized there's also PAL footage from a trip to Germany they did. Our VCR is dual format. This device supports both NTSC and PAL. So the VCR stays until that Germany tape surfaces. This isn't a converter anymore, it's Pandora's box. The modern kind. With a remote. If you've got old tapes sitting in a box somewhere and a VCR that still works, get this thing before both of those stop being true. And if your spouse had a wild past they think is safely buried on obsolete media, they should be very, very nervous right now. Read more

Breathe New Life into Your Old Memories – No Computer Required!

If you have a box of old VHS tapes or camcorder recordings gathering dust, this digital converter is a total lifesaver. What I love most about it is that it is a completely "plug and play" device—you don’t need a computer, complicated software, or any technical drivers to get it working. You simply connect it to your working VCR or camcorder using the included cables and hit record. It’s an incredibly simple way to preserve those precious family moments into a modern digital format that won't degrade over time. The built-in 4-inch screen is a fantastic feature because it lets you preview exactly what you’re recording in real-time. It even has built-in speakers, so you can hear the audio as it captures. If you want a bigger view, you can easily hook it up to your TV via HDMI to share the memories with the whole family while you work. The storage options are very flexible, too; you can save your videos directly onto a USB flash drive or a TF card. It even has a handy "Storage Speed Test" in the settings to make sure your thumb drive is fast enough for high-quality recording. This little box is surprisingly versatile and works with everything from old VCRs and Hi8 camcorders to retro game consoles and even record players. It can capture video at up to 1080P resolution, ensuring your digital files look as crisp as possible. It also includes a remote control and a timed recording function, which is great if you want to set a long tape to record and walk away. Just remember that you do need your own working VCR or camera to play the tapes! Overall, it’s a reliable, user-friendly, and five-star solution for anyone looking to digitize their past. Read more

Oops. Need a VHS Player

I was excited to get this as I have 10 or 12 VHS tapes with personal videos on them that I am dreading losing, and thought this was worth a try to see if I could save them myself without having to hire a "service." Once I unpacked the box and looked at the small unit, all the various cords, and the instructions, I realized I had to plug this unit into a VHS player (or directly into a camcorder or something like that--there seem to be cords for many eventualities) to rescue and digitize the videos. Oops, we ditched our last (broken) VHS player probably 2 decades ago. Alas, this unit alone is worthless to me, but my mistake--I should have analyzed the product description more closely. Since I got the item for "free" on the Vine program, I can't return it. Hopefully my review will help you avoid the same mistake. Read more
