After buying several low cost thermometers and NONE of them providing accurate temperature measurements, I decided to go ahead and pay the extra money for a medical-grade thermometer. Expensive? Yes, but when you consider that you could buy several lower cost thermometers that won't provide clinical grade (read reliable) temperature readings a thermometer that provides clinical grade accuracy is worth the extra cost. The medical community really doesn't want you to have any devices that may save you a costly visit to the "doctor".
