I bought 2 of these. They were able to keep each floor of my house comfortable when it was in the 80s outside. If I close a door so that it works in the space it is created for, it cools it way down quickly. It is noisy, but I just used a fan while sleeping after I lowered the room temp. Still going after the whole summer! Read more

It's a basic AC, that I picked up for it's small size but high enough output for my bedroom/office. It puts out colder air than my 10,000 BTU Honeywell that is much larger. Noise: I shut if off during work meetings. While I do wish the unit was a bit quieter, the white noise actually helps me sleep better. My apartment has two truck bays next door with 2am and 4am deliveries. Even when it's not hot weather, I run this as a fan at night for this reason. Installation: Straightforward. I like that the kit included some weather stripping to seal the window. Because my window is narrower than the smallest setting for the window adapter strip, I had to cut it to fit into my window, which will be the trickiest part if you're working without the correct power tools (a chop saw is ideal for this part). I drilled a few holes in it with my powerdrill and used pressure to snap off the length I needed to remove. Reliability: I did have a problem that sounds very similar to what some other reviewers had mentioned - where there were cricket sounds, display flickering, and random shutting off. I contacted Whynter support and they directed me to the electrical connection for the display. I'm handy enough to be able to do this myself without much instruction. I disconnected and reconnected the display cable and haven't had problems since. If you're having problems, contact the manufacturer. I got a quick response. Read more

I swear, I was being BOILED ALIVE in my apartment! It was SWELTERING, and my medication puts me at high risk of heat stroke. This AC cooled down my apartment in less than 10 minutes! We placed it in our living room, facing outwards so that it reaches the dining room, kitchen, and foyer. This bad boy is so efficient, we can feel all the way in the bedroom — sometimes I wake up with my teeth chattering, hahaha. I put a 5-gal bucket with wheels next to our AC with a plastic tube to drain in to. At first, it only needed to be drained twice in one week. As the weather got hotter (and more humid), we've had to drain it a bit more often; about once every day or two. Not bad at all, I HIGLY, HIGHLY recommend this AC! Read more

Puts out a huge amount of cold air and removes a lot of humidity. But my only problem is that it exhausts a lot of air out of the house. Sort of defeats its purpose. I will get the dual hose one next time. Has an intake hose that cools and dehumidifies the outside air it pulls in. I moved it to my shop to dehumidify and keep dogs cool. It is the best dehumidifier out there. Blows cold air as it runs and blows hot air outside but still exhausts way too much air. I never run it when its 90 degrees out. Not efficient. Read more

Quality control!—June 30, 2024
We ordered the unit from Amazon, got it, didn’t put into use until after a month of it sitting. The beginning of the heat, set it up, plugged it in, but it didn’t work. I called Whynter, spoke with Chenie, who ave me the info needed to send the unit back to Whynter. She sent me the shipping label & I delivered it to UPS. In anticipation of problems, I was pleasantly surprised with the courteous emails & handling of the entire process by Chenie. Long story short, in relatively short order, we received a completely new unit. We immediately set it up & have been enjoying the cool air in our home. It works beautifully! Thanks to Chenie, we can give praise to quality control. Read more

I just hate this thing. And here's why: (1) Not much cooling power. Size of room where I'm using it is considerably below the maximum size this unit is supposed to cool, but even several hours of running the thing does not bring temp down that much. One hot night the room started off in low 80's. After running unit all night long, set to cool to 68 degrees, room temp was 76. And areas of the room that were furthest from the unit were just plain hot, probably still in mid-80's. This thing does not air condition the room, it more functions as a personal cooling unit. If you aim it right at you, it cools YOU off. (2) Vent hose keeps popping loose. In about 10 nights use, it has twice fallen off in the middle of the night (and then the unit stops cooling the room, of course). Hose now looks a bit bent at one end, which is probably why it does not stay securely attached to its end piece. But I did not damage it by being rough or careless with it. I was careful when I did the initial set-up, attaching hose to unit at one end and window bracket at other. Seems like problem must be due to bad design -- attachment set-up not secure, or materials used in hose and end pieces not strong enough. (3) Problem accessing customer support. Amazon has a link for support services for this product, but when I contacted them I just got a generic Amazon support person who said she would send word to the manufacturer, Whynter, and have them contact me within 48 hours. Of course they did not. I have the option of returning this unit to Amazon for a refund within the first 30 days of buying it, but that is just not practical. The thing is huge, and so heavy I can barely lift it, and cannot be packed in just any old box because of its size and weight. What I would like is for someone to come to my house and check to see whether I have gotten a defective unit that does not cool the air enough and/or does not blow it out with enough force. But I have no leverage to get Whynter to do that. They didn't even sell it to me -- Amazon did. I suppose it might be possible to get Amazon to help somehow with packing up and returning this LAME-ASS PRODUCT, or to somehow get Whynter to come check it and replace it. But there is no simple way to do it and I do not want to put more time into the problem, so I am just going to give up and put up with this crummy a/c, aiming it right at me so I get enough cooling to sleep. But a word to the wise: DO NOT BUY A WHYNTER PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER. Read more
