About this book

Frequently in partnership, but sometimes at odds, religious institutions and public health institutions work to improve the well-being of their communities. There is an increasing awareness among public health professionals and the general public that the social conditions of poverty, lack of education, income inequality, poor working conditions, or experiences of discrimination play a dominant role in determining health status. But this broad view of the social determinants of health has, until now, largely ignored the role of religious practices and institutions in shaping the life conditions of billions around the globe. In Religion as a Social Determinant of Public Health, leading scholars in the social sciences, public health, and religion address this omission by examining the embodied sacred practices of the world's religions, the history of alignment and tension between religious and public health institutions, the research on the health impact of religious practice throughout the life course, and the role of religious institutions in health and development efforts around the globe. In addition, the volume explores religion's role in the ongoing epidemics of HIV/AIDS and Alzheimer's disease, as well as preparations for an influenza pandemic. Together, these essays help complete the picture of the social determinants of health by including religion, which has until now been an invisible determinant. Some health-determining influence flows through people's participation in religious practices and affiliation with mosques, synagogues, and churches. Some of it flows through lifestyle factors associated with religious observance. Some comes from relationships between religious institutions and institutions of public health and medical care. Some comes from the role religious institutions play in their communities, and in providing help for those in need and leveraging social capital.A groundbreaking work, Religion as a Social Determinant of Public Health explores the complex, multifaceted role of faith traditions and public health in throughout history, today, in in the future.

The Hidden Health Care System

Social Resources in Health Care

Lowell S. Levin, Ellen L. Idler

Health care policy traditionally views lay people as health care consumers. This groundbreaking book offers evidence of a new perspective: lay people are the primary providers of health care. The family, organized religion, voluntary associations, neighborhoods, and ethnic and racial groups act as a buffer between the individual and the large institutions of modern society. These small social groups or "mediating structures" comprise the hidden non-professional health care system which is Cost Effective, Integral, and Enduring.

Handbook of Behavioral Medicine

Methods and Applications

Andrew Steptoe

Behavioral medicine emerged in the 1970s as the interdisciplinary field concerned with the integration of behavioral, psychosocial, and biomedical science knowledge relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Recent years have witnessed an enormous diversification of behavioral medicine, with new sciences (such as genetics, life course epidemiology) and new technologies (such as neuroimaging) coming into play. This book brings together such new developments by providing an up-to-date compendium of methods and applications drawn from the broad range of behavioral medicine research and practice. The book is divided into 10 sections that address key fields in behavioral medicine. Each section begins with one or two methodological or conceptual chapters, followed by contributions that address substantive topics within that field. Major health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, HIV/AIDs, and obesity are explored from multiple perspectives. The aim is to present behavioral medicine as an integrative discipline, involving diverse methodologies and paradigms that converge on health and well being.

Foster Care and Best Interests of the Child

Integrating Research, Policy, and Practice

Sarah A. Font, Elizabeth T. Gershoff

This brief examines the U.S. foster care system and seeks to explain why the foster care system functions as it does and how it can be improved to serve the best interest of children. It defines and evaluates key challenges that undermine child safety and well-being in the current foster care system. Chapters highlight the competing values and priorities of the system as well as the pros and cons for the use of foster care. In addition, chapters assess whether the performance objectives in which states are evaluated by the federal government are sufficient to achieve positive health and well-being outcomes for children who experience foster care. Finally, it offers recommendations for improving the system and maximizing positive outcomes. Topics featured in this brief include: Legal aspects of removal and placement of children in foster care. The effectiveness of prior efforts to reform foster care. The regulation and quality of foster homes. Support for youth aging out of the foster care system. Racial and ethnic disparities in the foster care system. Foster Care and the Best Interests of the Child is a must-have resource for policy makers and related professionals, graduate students, and researchers in child and school psychology, family studies, public health, social work, law/criminal justice, and sociology.
