Good Value for a Very Inexpensive, Sharp Knife Set

This is a basic set of knives that arrives very sharp and in minimal packaging. There's no box. The set arrives in a plastic poly bag with each knife's blade protected in folded cardboard and the 3 knifes packaged taped to a sheet of cardboard. Kudos for minimal and effective packaging. The price of these these knives was so low I had to have the set to see if there was any value to them. In the past, I have purchased dollar store knives to use at the youth sports snack shack and these knives beat those dollar store ones by a lot. The blades are thicker. The edges are sharper. They handles aren't flimsy plastic shells. The full length knife tangs are attached to the handles with 3 rivets. The sharpness of the blades are what one would expect. They'll slice a thin sliver off a sheet of paper. Slice a fresh tomato into very thin slices. I tested the 8 inch chefs knife by chopping up/shattering several chicken bones and was still able to slice through paper afterwards. After a quick sharpening on a diamond sharpening plate then honing on leather, the knife effortlessly sliced thin slivers off a sheet of paper again. So why are these knives so inexpensive? I believe the savings came during manufacturing. These are not high quality Japanese or German kitchen knives. They are utilitarian and made with minimal manufacturing steps while still creating a usable daily use knife. The handles and blade tangs are not fitted and polished. The manufacturing tool marks are visible. It appears polishing steps were kept to a minimum. While these knives will not win any beauty contest awards, they max out on high value for the price. These are not a gift set of knives. These are really good knives for their intended purpose -- staying sharp, being easy to maintain, and not fall apart in heavy use. Read more

These are the best knives I've ever used but they're not the worst either...

Let me just say, when I saw this knife set for what the seller was asking for them, I just had to try them out. I mean, if they were awful, I didn't even spend $5; and if they were awesome, I didn't even spend $5! Unfortunately, they arrived at a time when I had nothing to cut in my refrigerator - no meats, no vegetables, and no fruits. The only thing I had was an old head of lettuce. Not wanting to wait until I went shopping to see how well they performed, I got to thinking about taco night, when I used thinly sliced lettuce ribbons and said to myself, no time like the present to test these knives out. One of the first things I noticed was that the handles, while a good fit in my hand and were lightweight, were made out of plastic. The blades looked sharp, but were they sharp enough to handle all the tasks I do with my other knives? I was about to find out. I placed the remainder of the old head of lettuce I had on a cutting board, and chose to use the 8" chef knife, and got to work. As expected, it did slice through the lettuce. I'd like to say like a hot knife going through butter, but alas, it wasn't as good as that. One thing I noticed, I did have to have a hold on the lettuce as the knife wouldn't slice through it as it sat upon the cutting board. That was ok as I usually held onto anything I was slicing into. I tried making fine ribbon-like slices of lettuce by slicing along the edge and working back to produce the ribbons of lettuce I wanted. It did just fine for that. Then, I chopped the ribbons of lettuce using a chopping motion. It did just fine for that, as well. Then I just started hacking away at what I had already sliced and the remainder of the lettuce I hadn't slice and when I was done, I would say that I had a nice pile of minced lettuce. One thing I noticed is that the blade of the knife had a lot of lettuce building up on both sides of the blade. Using my fingers, I tried running them along the blades in an attempt to clear the blade. It seemed difficult to achieve - more difficult than I thought it should have been. I'm no expert on knives, but I wonder if the sides of the blade were not as smooth as they appeared to be at first glance. The only way I could clear the blades of all the bits of lettuce was to run it under running water in the kitchen sink. All in all, this knife set is, in my opinion, a great value for the asking price. I don't think I've ever seen a 3-piece knife set for a price point below $5. It would be perfect set for people moving out on their own and needing to fill their kitchen full of kitchen items, or for people adding to their collection of kitchen items. I can't speak to how long these will last as I've just received them, but as long as the construction of the knives holds up (meaning the plastic handles don't come apart from base of the stainless-steel blades), you will surely get your money's worth out of them. As far as the sharpness of the blades - all blades become dull after continued use and is an easy fix using a knife sharpening tool. Read more

3-Piece Knife Set – Decent Basics, Outstanding Value for the Price

This 3-piece knife set includes an 8" chef’s knife, a 5" utility knife, and a 4.5" paring knife. For the price point, it’s clearly aimed at basic, everyday kitchen use rather than professional performance. Out of the box, the knives are not razor-sharp. They will handle soft foods, fruits, and light prep without issue, but anyone expecting a very sharp edge for heavy chopping or precision work may want to sharpen them first. That said, the blades are consistent and usable, especially for casual cooking. One positive construction detail worth noting is that the blade metal runs the full length of the handle (full tang). This is generally considered a good trait because it improves balance and durability compared to knives where the blade stops short inside the handle. The knives feel reasonably sturdy in hand and better balanced than I expected at this price. The handles are lightweight plastic and comfortable enough for short chopping sessions. These are not premium materials, but they are functional and easy to clean. The included blade sheaths are also a nice touch for drawer storage and safety. Bottom line: These are budget knives in the truest sense—nothing fancy, not especially sharp out of the box, but functional and surprisingly solid given the cost. For under $4 for all three knives, this set makes sense for a starter kitchen, vacation rental, RV, dorm, or as backup knives where you don’t want to risk damaging expensive cutlery. Reasonable expectations are key, and at this price, the value is hard to argue with. Read more
