Here is my review for the Wintale 7 in 1 Portable External CD/DVD Drive for Laptops - Model B0FXWHQJD7. Not just an read/write optical drive, but a fully functional hub supporting: - USB 3.0 flash drives (2 USB-A connection ports) - USB C flash drives (2 USB-C connection ports) - SD (1 SD card slot) - micro SD (1 micro SD card slot) In addition there is a USB-C port on the back to draw additional power to support the needs of both the optical drive and the hub simultaneously. (The manufacturer recommends using this connection for power in addition to that supplied from the integrated USB connection cable.) I found the hub to be very responsive. When a USB-C flash drive was plugged into either of the two available C-ports, the corresponding drive icon would immediately appear on the Mac desktop. The same was true when a USB-A flash drive was plugged into either of the two A-ports. It was easy to open up the folders for both and explore their contents. A very similar situation resulted when a SD card was inserted into the SD card slot, though the response was a little slower. I tested the optical drive by connecting it to a MacBook Air M1 and an older MacBook Pro (Intel), and using a data CD, two different music CDs, and then two Movie DVDs. In all cases the drive performs flawlessly. There was some slight “spin up” noise after a disc was inserted, but the drive was fairly quiet during operation. For both computers the music CDs played without a glitch and the movie DVDs delivered impressive video images. I also tested the drive’s writing performance in creating an archival backup for a variety of files and photo images, connecting it to my MacBook Air M1 and using a DVD+R DL dual layer disc. Though this drive cannot write (burn) two layers to the full 8.5 GB capacity, it can write to one layer to the standard 4.7 GB capacity. Burning the disc took about 20 minutes - I should have selected a much larger set of files. The resulting disc could be inserted into one of my desktop computers and read without issue. (After reinserting the disc into the optical drive, I was able to explore the contents again with the MacBook Air.) On the whole this drive was great. A truly versatile “gizmo” as a functional portable device. All the optical drive functions worked perfectly - from playing media discs, to reading and writing data discs, and even performing higher level DVD burn procedures. The hub functions also performed well, especially in using the flash drives. I do plan to use this drive with my HP laptop, and possibly with an Ubuntu machine I have. Since it appears to be fully functional as a “Plug and Play” device for macOS and Windows, I am not anticipating any major issues with Ubuntu. Things I like: 1. Versatile as a Hub with flash drives and SD cards 2. Flexibility as a portable optical drive 3. Love the integrated USB-A/USB-C cable and its recessed storage cavity in the bottom of the drive 4. Quick and quiet operation with inserted discs 5. The supplied USB-C to USB-A power cable to provide additional power when needed 6. Thin, light design 7. A reasonably well written “User Manual” 8. Plug and Play - no (or minimal) driver requirements A few minor things that I think would be desirable or improve this product: 1. A lightweight Aluminum case (not plastic) for added strength and protection (This would make it a little more expensive. For now, plastic will work.) 2. Larger rubber footpads to improve vibration dampening and noise reduction 3. Provide the “User Manual” as a pdf for download Over all, I think this 7 in 1 portable optical drive is an excellent option if you need such a device. With the built-in hub functionality it is even more attractive. I’m thinking of setting it up as semi-dedicated drive/hub device for my MacMini. For me this is a great 5 star device. Read more
