Don’t place it by the heater inside or in the sun outside

Very reliable and accurate, easy to read and it lets you know when to change the batteries by blinking. It’s also very small and easy to hide. Read more

This gadget has been a wonderful tool in our stable to monitor heated horse waterers..

Ruthβ€”November 22, 2018βœ“ Verified purchase

Our stable uses heated horse waterers which have a double bowl on top of a metal base which contains a heater. The heaters are difficult to adjust to any particular temperature and it was crucial that I could determine how close to freezing the temperature in the closed base unit was at various air temperature in the barn. Freezeup inside the heater base could break the essential water lines and valves and become a huge problem. I decided to experiment with the Acurite indoor/outdoor thermometers . I set the "outdoor" wireless transmitting unit inside the base box of the waterer to monitor the heater performance and hung the "indoor" thermometer/receiving unit on the wall a few feet outside the waterer. I have double-checked with mercury thermometers and found that Acurite units gave me accurate readings inside the waterer base. All last winter when air temps dropped below zero I could quickly determine the temperature within the base unit and adjust the heaters as needed. It was an unusual use but was fabulous and prevented many problems. Despite what it says in the instructions, the "inside" thermometer/receiver works great well below 32 degrees. I see no reason they wouldn't do great in the simpler situation of giving you readings in your home and at some target point outside. I did have a problem of resetting them when I changed batteries after a year. One unit started interfering with the other so I threw it out and replaced it. They are inexpensive enough that replacement was not a concern. They are out there tonight monitoring the waterers in our barn and eliminating many worries.. Such a cheap way to prevent problems and get a good night's sleep. Read more

Functional & reliable, but QC issues on new units.

adamgβ€”March 27, 2025βœ“ Verified purchase

Giving this 4 stars because I had one on my camper for a couple of years. I had the outside unit zip tied under the frame, and honestly I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did especially when towing through rain and dirty roads it would get covered in water & dirt and then still work when we got to the campsite, so that speaks to its resilience. Well the outdoor unit did finally die, it was all corroded when I opened it up. I ordered the same unit as a replacement and the replacement was non-functional from the start. Would not connect to the outdoor unit, indoor unit always said it was at low battery (despite trying several fresh batteries), and the LCD display had some elements that were not illuminating. I sent that one back for a full refund and purchased a more comprehensive unit that includes humidity. So, when it works, it works great, but if you get a dud from the start just send it back. durable, accurate

Joseph Morrisβ€”August 31, 2025βœ“ Verified purchase

I have one of these that is 7 years old and still working fine which is not true of most things you buy for $15 these days. I just put this and a Govee sensor in my wedgewood stove which has pilot light so it's always warm, and they both agree within a tenth of a degree that it is 131.7 degrees in there, so seemingly it is functional and accurate at high temperatures as well. We usually just leave it outside so that we can see what the weather is like in terms of what clothes to put on. Batteries last forever, I might change them out every . . . 6 months? But it might even be longer than that. And these are rechargeables. Read more

accurate and reliable

unlistedβ€”August 28, 2024βœ“ Verified purchase

We live in a house that sets up on short blocks and has a crawl space about two feet high. The well pipe pops up in the crawl space about a foot from the insulated wall of the crawl space skirt. We keep an eye on the temperature down there using this remote unit because the temps frequently drop below zero in the winter and we need to check the heat tape on the pipe if the temps in the crawl space go below freezing. The remote transmitter is about half the size of a computer mouse and can be set on a flat surface or hung on a wall or from a pipe using a piece of stiff wire. The batteries lasted over two years and the unit worked for three. I suspect it would still be working if not for a nearby lightening strike this summer that toasted a number of electronic devices we had operating near the house. When we had to replace the set-up, we opted for the exact same unit because of it's simplicity and reliability. Read more

Not made for outside, and terrible range.

Jeepinβ€”April 10, 2025βœ“ Verified purchase

I just received this today with the goal of using it with my RV, and I'm not impressed. Sitting next to each other on the table there is a 2-3 degree (F) difference between the indoor and outdoor temperature even after sitting for a few minutes to equalize after putting batteries in. For this, I've removed 1 star. I've removed 4 stars, because the "outdoor" sensor is in no way ready to be outdoors. It is cheap, low quality plastic with absolutely no apparent attempt to weather seal it. So if you have a perfectly dry place to put it outside it will probably work. Most places I can think of that would be guaranteed to stay dry would likely impact the readings though. You can clearly see in to the circuit board through the hanging hole. Even if the circuit board was coated to make it waterproof, the battery compartment is not. Lastly, if you plan to use this beyond a few feet, good luck. I have a plastic dry-box on the tongue of my 18' trailer where I placed the "outdoor" sensor. It will stay dry, but not accurate. It does seem to reach to inside the trailer. My 18' trailer is backed up to my small garage. If I place the receiver inside the garage, no more signal. So it will reach about 8', but it won't reach 50'. It was cheap, so I won't send it back because that is more work than it is worth. I just wanted to generally know the temperature inside and outside, so I guess it gets me somewhat close. Read more
