American Weigh Scales SL Series Precision Multifunction Scale LCD Screen Stainless Steel 13lb x 0 1oz AMW-13-SL

I wanted a scale that I could use to track my bunnies' weights (3-4 lbs each) and my sugar gliders' weights (around 50-55g). I spent a LONG time shopping and looked at every scale I could find in the $25 or less range. things I looked for (I think I remembered them all): ~ accurate down to 1g increments ~ uses a normal battery instead of one of the expensive lithium ones ~ fairly large weighing area ~ tare function ~ good reviews/no red flags that it might not be the right scale for me ~ appeared easy to use ~ no unnecessary "bells and whistles" ~ reasonable price eventually, I narrowed my choices down to this scale. I would've preferred something that takes AA batteries, as I've got tons of AA rechargables... but I settled for 9V because everything else about this scale appeared to be exactly what I wanted. contrary to what some others have mentioned, the battery that was included with the scale fit perfectly - my guess is they remedied that problem at some point. I've used this scale *very* frequently for the couple months I've had it so far and the original battery is still going strong. I've found more uses for this scale than I ever thought I would - weighing out portions, weighing packages to mail, etc. - it's surprisingly handy! it's also very easy to switch between modes. the scale is very accurate/consistent, even with a sugar glider or Syrian hamster walking back and forth across the weighing surface or with a bunny *constantly* shifting around inside a box placed on the surface. however, as a note to anyone using this to measure food ingredients and such, it can sometimes take a second or two to register a change in weight. I don't like the 1-minute auto-shutoff (I think 3 mins, which is what most scales' auto-shutoff is set to, is much more reasonable)... however, the fact that you can flip a switch on the underside of the scale to disable the auto-shutoff completely more than makes up for that. TL:DR - all-in-all, it's a great/high quality scale for a very affordable price. fairly simple, does what you need it to, easy to clean, compact to store, large weighing surface, uses a non-lithium battery, very accurate down to the gram and isn't thrown off by an animal that refuses to stand still for two seconds. I wasn't sure when we ordered this if I would get as much use out of it as I wanted to. I was wrong on that count. We use this all the time. It is the perfect size for us. We weigh out everything from chips to meat servings for hamburgers. I even put an envelope on it the other day to make sure it had enough postage. Cleans up very easy. It is not large and in the way like may of the one I looked at. I didn't want it so small that it would be useless either. This fit the bill perfect. Everything worked well. Numbers are readable and is backlit for a period of them. The tare feature works great. I know others have mentioned about the battery being a tight fit or making the scale not level. I thought I had other battery on had but didn't because I was just going to put it in. I had no problems with the battery they included. It was a tight fit but no problem causing the scale to be not level. This could have been a problem that was fixed since the previous reviews. I had an older version of this model AWS scale that served me well for several years. The wires that attached the battery to the body finally broke, so life for that scale ended abruptly. That, to me, is a flaw in the design, as there is a little wired pad that the battery connects to, and makes it difficult to attach the battery on such short wires, especially since my weak fingers from carpal tunnel syndrome make it difficult to press the battery into place. However, after looking into numerous other models, I decided to replace the old AMW13 with this new one, and am extremely happy with it. It fits right onto my kitchen counter unobtrusively and for most of my weighing chores, it is perfect. I do have to say that I have 2 other scales-one for slightly larger items up to 50 pounds, and another really heavy duty one for huge items. But this little scale is my mainstay scale. The LCD lights up very brightly, there's a switch on the bottom that you can adjust to automatically turn off this light after so many minutes of not being used, the scale easily switches from pounds & ounces to grams & kilograms.
