I had to run water through it for about 3 minutes. So I don't get black charcoal stains like on clothes or in a drink. But they suggest or tell you you need to. Where Im at the water is very rusty and actually dirty (old well). Now I have no worries to drink or bathe (shower). P. S.- to drink the water, I actually had the water tested for contamination for our ( bacterial etc. ) its very hard water. But - its safe to drink, do dishes, & shower. Update: After buying the most expensive brands and still getting the same results, I have to say that these filters are the best quality and quantity for the price. I live in a campground that has terrible water and have tried different filters, because of the water quality none of them last longer than 2 weeks. At least with these you get more for your money! Thanks I live in a camper on a campground where the water is so horrible that if I do not have a filter it smells terrible. I never drink the water or even give it to my dog, so the idea of having a filter was one I have considered and after looking at the reviews I thought this would be a great deal. But so far I've only had the filters for a little over a month and I'm about to be on my third one. It may just be the water system that they have here on the campground I've never smelled water this bad but for me I will need a stronger filter that last longer. Especially for everyday use. I will say that it does work really good temporarily and if you're in a place that doesn't have horrible water then they will probably last you a lot longer but for me I just need something more. I i stalled first filter about 2 days ago and today pressure was horrible and dirt came through. I removed it and installed another one. Maybe that one was defective? I will update this review on how second new one is working. Also on both filters I had to put plumbers tape on the hose because it leaked. My old filter didn't leak so its not my hose. Read more
