I bought because I am switching from making bread with dry yeast to sourdough starter. The starter jar was recommended by a professional. The silicone mat, basket, breathable cover and bread lame were nice extras I wanted to add to my kitchen. The long silicone scraper is wonderful for reaching the bottom of the jar and the sides too. Everyone working with dough will appreciate the silicone brush, dough whisk, dough scraper and bowl scraper if you don't already have them. It is a great value, easy to use and clean. The jar is the star! Two lids: one air tight for the refrigerator and a breathable cloth cover for the counter. The includes measuring lines to monitor the changes in the dough starter, an elastic band record the time you started and the height of the dough. It has a thermometer band that can you determine where best to store your starter. Also, very helpful are the instructions. Don't waste your time with comparing YouTube videos and multiple blogs. The best instructions were in the box! Read them and you enjoy success quickly! Love my starter kit! Read more

The cloth lid for the jar is cute, but not practical, use the solid lid that comes with it and toss the fabric cover, it will help prevent bacteria in your starter. The tools - perfect! Every other item - perfect! It’s a really great little set for starters! And then for baking!! Read more

Some of it I liked, some it I don't like, if you're new to making bread in general and starting sour dough, it's an awesome kit. I have made bread several times before and I've found the basket and the cloth cover to be a hassle and have used it twice. It dries out the rising bread too much, giving the top a crust that's annoying. I've never used the silicone mat, have never felt the need to. Everything else is awesome. Especially the dough whisk, don't know what I've done without it. While I don't use the recipe it gives or the instructions, it was very useful to refer to when I first started sour dough. I still think the kit is worth getting wherever you are at in sourdough making, if you don't have singles of these tools, but for me personally the basket and mat are pretty useless, the rest I love and use regularly for bread and other baking. Got this kit for my daughter who has been wanting to make sourdough bread forever. She loves this kit and says it comes with everything you could possibly need. I also got her the sourdough proofing starter. I was afraid she would mess up the dough and lose interest. Fortunately, every loaf has come out beautifully. She baked the entire month of December and gave her loaves to friends and co-workers who were thrilled to receive them. Read more

This sourdough starter kit was exactly what I needed to get started — everything was included, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I didn’t have any issues at all, which was a relief since this was my first time making sourdough from scratch. The starter activated just like it was supposed to, and I was able to bake a really good loaf with it! The tools that came with the kit were useful and made the process feel less intimidating. It’s definitely beginner-friendly but still feels like a quality setup for anyone wanting to get into sourdough baking. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone curious about baking their own bread. It’s a great starting point and takes the guesswork out of getting everything you need. Read more

Amazing starter kit! The dough loop is made of thick metal, the jar with thermometer and schedule band is perfect for growing your own starter. I’ve washed the jar many times with the thermometer stuck on it, and it has not broken or come off yet. I use the spatula every day to manage the starter. It took 2-3 weeks, but I’ve grown my own starter from scratch and am making sourdough using the things from this kit! Now that I’m a bit more seasoned, I might want a jar that’s a bit wider mouth like a weck jar (I have a 3/4 weck jar for discard rn) but my main starter is still growing in this jar in the fridge. One tip for growing your own starter: after it starts growing in a week (ignore the first false rise), you can strengthen your starter by stirring it at peak. The starter will collapse and then grow again. When this hits peak, you can either refeed or stir again and see if it’ll grow. If not, definitely refeed. What this does is introduce the existing yeast to sugars in the starter that it had no way of coming into contact with otherwise and will grow your yeast population even more without using more flour and water. Just beware of the starter potentially getting too sour. Read more
