This is a very nice knife sharpener. The first impression - it looks very nice, with a gift-presentable black box, with a foam cut-out insert. When you first open the box, it looks a lot like a sword. The handle is reminiscent of a sword, and the sharpener is shaped like a sword - only thicker. Taking it out of the box, you notice first the weight - this weighs about a pound (guessing). This is NOT the cheap sharpener found in a knife block at the big box stores. It has a solid heft. The wooden handle is a beautiful color, with a very nice wood pattern. It’s polished to a satin sheen. The sharpener itself does NOT have the vertical grooves, like the cheap ones in a big box store knife set. Rather, the texture is reminiscent of the ceramic sharpening stone, with a very fine grit. There are no grooves - it’s a solid piece. The sharpener is not round, like those found in a big store knife box set. Rather it is more flat, and thicker in the center, so that from the side it appears more oblong than round. There is very smooth transition from the edge to the center, making it easier to get the tip of the knife sharp. The weight, the beautiful wood finish, and the great presentation make this very giftable. I admit, I was impressed when I received it. Read more

When I opened the box I was so impressed, I just want to hang this tool on my wall as a work of art. From the wood handle to the steel itself, it is certainly a quality item. This is another review from a chef that also gave it five stars so I know I am in the right company here. I will have to review a few videos on how to use it since there are no instructions in the box for the first timer. I usually muddle through the knife sharpening process so I am hoping I can master, or at least learn the basics of using this (so at least I can look like a professional). I'm hoping that I can also use it on some woodworking tools as well. This would make a great gift for the chef, or the aspiring chef in the family. Read more

This honing sword is absolutely amazing quality. This honing sword is very estheticly pleasing as well as very effective. I love displaying this honing sword when not in use. This honing sword is excellent quality from the handle to the metal used in creating the sanding and smoothing sides. This is one of the best sharpeners I have ever owned. This sharpener feels great in the hands giving you a wonderful sharpening experience. This honing sword took a little bit of practice to figure out how to use it but, once I did it is so easy and quick to get a perfect edge on my knives. I was able to sharpen all my kitchen knives sharper than when I bought them. All of my knives have perfectly sharp edges with no scratching or dulling. This overall is an awesome sharpener and one I can see using for years to come. It is excellent quality, very easy to use and handle, and helps you get the perfect edge everytime. Not sure if it's the material this is made of or the design but it definitely works better than the others I've had. Higher quality construction with some heft in it. It's an impressive tool and makes a big difference in the sharpness of your knives. The sizing is not accurate on the box. It is a 10 inch honing steel rod with fine grade lines. You can see in the image, compared to an average block knife sharpener - this one is longer, thicker with a better protection piece at the base of the honing steel. Given that, this one will not fit into your kitchen knife block for those same qualities. It's highly effective. I am using this one now, since it is so much better quality craftsmanship. Comfortable handle design, fits naturally in my hand. It would be a great gift, especially for a guy. I have used it for more than 30 days and found zero issues with the functionality.
