Katadyn Vario Water Filtration Ceramic Disc

Katadyn makes a great filter, and these discs help to keep the filter media clean from debris. It's important to realize that filtering water with sediment will dramatically cut the life of the filter, because this unit (the Vario) is actually a PURIFIER. Now I've used it to clean some really nasty water, and it worked great. When you're out on the trail, sometimes that is your only option. But doing so kills the filter. This "pre-filter" ceramic disc is cleaned with a green scrub pad (or when mine got really bad I used steel wool). This is simply a replacement for the stock piece, and works great. Read more

First off, the Vario is a great water filter. I do a lot of camping and backpacking, and have had three or four different brands over the years. I currently have a Pur model also, but prefer the Katadyn hands down for its ergonomic use and selectable speed based on the desired life of the filter. This ceramic disc is one of three replaceable pieces of the Katadyn Vario filter, along with the carbon packs and the actual micro filter. Of the three, this is probably the easiest to replace, and can make a huge difference towards the speed of filtration when you're swapping a new ceramic disc for an old one. The included instructions are easy to follow, if you haven't already figured it out based on cleaning your filter post-use. This piece is also the most difficult of the three to find (EMS, Cabela's and REI all failed to stock this) so Amazon is definitely the place to buy this. Read more

Product works as advertised. Love the triple filtration of the Vario. I use a bandana or some sort of cloth tied over the end of the pre-filter to avoid particles getting onto the ceramic filter cause it clogs pretty easy. It is easy to clean with the green scrub pad. i always carry an extra ceramic disk with me just in case. It is cheaper to buy ceramic discs than to buy the glass media filter. Have not used this filter in merky water. Overall filter works great as carbon filters out any bad taste. Read more

Needed to have a backup disc for my water purifier so I got this one. Great water purifier but everything wears out so the old adage about two is one and one is none induced me to get a backup filter. Read more

Bought this as a addition to the Vario filter. This replacement is a "must have" if you're filtering really bad/dirty water. It is easy to replace in the field IF you follow the directions carefully and be aware that one can cross contaminate the filter body. We've had no problems with the filters as long as we treated the assembly carefully. Recommend at least one of these spare replacement filters be included in one's kit when going on a excursion.
