Good Build Quality - Easier to Use than Traditional Sharpening Steel

SamJanuary 12, 2026

This is a knock off of a knock off. There are others that are better quality but they're also more expensive. This has a unique feature of magnetically interchangeable sanding wheels of different grits which is a nice addition. This kit comes with gloves you'll never use and supports more grind degree angles than you need for any standard set of knives. Those aren't bad things but they're extra and not needed. The wood is reasonable quality. It rolls nicely enough. The magnets are strong enough to hold the sanding disks very easily. Overall, the construction is good and the quality is OK. How sharp does it get knives? It gets them very sharp which is nice. This is a ton easier to use than a traditional sharpening steel. There is almost no room for user error. Use the right degree for your knives and you're set. Most knives are 20 degrees. Some Japanese knives are finer at 10-15 degrees. These get your knives a lot sharper than those little electric grinding wheels or automatic sharpeners. These do not get your knives as sharp as a proper whetstone. Those also cost many times more than this kit. I'm happy with this. I gave it to a family member for the holidays and they've used it and reported back that they found it easy to use, too. Read more

Works well but not for all knives

DavidJanuary 3, 2026

In general, I like the idea of this style of sharpener. It's a clever way to keep the blade at the appropriate angle when sharpening. This particular model is not bad for a copy of the original. It comes in a nice box, is relatively well made and has magnetic interchangeable sharpening and honing discs. I imagine they will last a long time but when they do eventually wear out (I don't know....do they wear out) I don't know if replacements will be available. I tried this first on an old knife I don't care about too much just to test it and it seemed to work well. So I used it on a newer knife and it worked well too. However, with both knives, I encountered a problem. One of my knives has a taller blade and the sharpener was not able to reach the back 3/4" of the blade or so. On the other knife, the way the handle is angled, it prevented the sharpener from reaching the last inch or so of the blade. Also, on both knives, the sharpener doesn't reach the tip of the knife without angling the roller which seems awkward. The other major caveat with this type of sharpener is the safety issue. The knife is blade up when you are sharpening so you really have to pay attention and be aware of what you are doing. So yes, this works and in some cases, works well. But it does not work for all my knives. Read more
