Previous owner did not maintain anything in this home, so it was no surprise when we went to replace this filter. The old one was the yarn style and it looked like brick red yarn. We have been using this new filter for several weeks now and it seems to be doing the job. No discoloration in the water, less staining in toilets, and the pressure has not decreased. Read more

Our city has water that testing shows greatly exceeds federal water purity standards. Still, my wife doesn't trust it. So a few years ago we had a whole-house charcoal-based water purifying system put in. These filters are used as a pre-filter for the system, and it's amazing at how deep brown they are after 6 months. Shocking, actually. I expect that they'll extend the million gallon/10 year life of the charcoal system by a year or two. They're very easy to change--no plumber needed. You can read the instructions and then watch a video, The keys are to push the pressure relief valve for 15-20 seconds and use the correct wrench made for this size filter housing. Use food-grade silicon grease when changing the o-ring washer. If you want a sediment filter, I highly recommend this one. Read more

I’ve been using these “dual gradient” whole house water filters for more than 15 years to remove any sediment from our well water. The benefit of a dual gradient filter is they act like two separate filters – the first layers remove larger sediment (e.g. silt, sand) down to 25 microns and the inner layer removes tiny particles –down to 5 microns. These filters do not remove chemicals or improve taste – they simply remove particles/sediment from the water. When our well was first dug, I had to change filters every 2~3 months. Within a year, that slowed to 4~6 months, now after 20 years – I typically change the filter annually, or sooner if I notice a pressure drop. I also have a 3-stage filter system under the kitchen sink for drinking/cooking/ice-cube water which filters to 1 micron and removes bacteria and viruses. Note: The more sediment that is in your water, the more often you will need to change your filter. Some reviewers complained that their filters clogged after only a few months… gee, that is what a filter is supposed to do. Pentair does make another model (DGD-2501) dual gradient filter with a 25 micron prefilter and 1 micron final filter. If I didn’t have separate drinking water filtration system, I would use the DGD-2501 filter – knowing that I would need to change it more often. I highly recommend the Pentair Pentek family of water filters! Read more
