This Makita 18v jump starter is nicely made and has a look and feel of quality. No complaints there. The main issue is it requires that the battery you want to jump start is not completely dead. There is 0v coming out of the jumper cable clamps with only the Makita 18v battery inserted. That means you can't even connect it to a completely dead car battery to even give it a little charge. If this jump starter had a "boost" mode like many of the portable lithium ion jump starters, it could be the perfect product. I ended up returning the item for this reason. Read more

I've bought half a dozen little jump start kits over the year but I always forget to keep them charged and the batteries eventually crap out. I saw this and thought it would be perfect, since my Makita batteries are always charged up and I only need this at home to jump the lawnmower when it dies. The construction of unit feels sturdy and well made. It's easily carried/stored and it's especially nice that the cables disconnect so you don't have to worry about wrapping them up (they're pretty thick). My Makita battery fit in perfectly and the lights on the unit work as they should. The instructions tell you to connect it to the car battery and let it sit for a bit to give it a pre-charge, then crank the engine. I did this on a dead zero turn and it started right up. I expect small cars would work just as well, though I didn't have a dead car to test it with. I'm skeptical on how well it would work to jump my Ram (those little jump start kits have had problems as well) and hopeful I'll never have to test it. YMMV. If you're a landscaper or handyman who uses Makita tools (and why wouldn't you?), this is a tool that should definitely be in your truck! Definitely recommended. Read more
