This alum stone works great. When I tried a new (to me) blade, I cut myself and had irritation on my neck. This stone plugged my bleeder and soothed my irritated neck. I have tried other alum blocks, but this one seems to work best for me. It comes in a cardboard box, so I bought a travel size soap carrier to keep it in, to let it dry for re-use. I look forward to seeing how long this one stone last. Read more

Very nice and soothing, although it will hurt a tiny bit initially. Smaller than expected but still gets the job done. I would recommend. Read more
I'm not really the most careful shaver, and I don't use the best handle or blades, so I usually nick myself a few times when I shave. This has quickly stopped the bleeding from all but one particularly deep nick I gave myself a couple weeks ago, and even that one only took a couple minutes to seal up using this block. I used to use either styptic powder or a styptic pencil, but after using this even once I'm never going back. It's really nice to have a couple square inches of contact area because it makes it so easy to just use it on my entire face whether I cut myself or not. My skin feels healthier in general since I started using this, and I think it's because it seals up all the otherwise-bloodless microscopic cuts I give myself while shaving -- the signature "styptic sting" makes it pretty easy to feel when it's "found" a cut I didn't see. The end result is a smooth face with minimal irritation. The one improvement that they can make to this is the smoothness of the block out of the factory. It's a little bit rough to start with, but still smooth enough to immediately use on my face. Even if one is sensitive to a rougher block, it's easy enough to remedy yourself -- just bring it in to the shower a few times and rub the end on your forearms. It'll be nice and smooth within a week. Read more
Use this Proraso alum block after EVERY shave, and stop those nicks and weepers right in their tracks. A quality astringent after shaving will help keep your skin healthy, and clear. Changed your razor or blade? Wondering how close and comfortable or baby-butt-smooth of a shave you just got? Rinse off your leftover shaving soap/cream, and glide this alum block over your freshly shaved skin; a uniform and nick/burn free shave will deliver a fresh, cool feeling. Areas that you may have been too aggressive with, or caught a nick, will sting for a moment...but that's OK, the alum is doing its astringent job! Liken this to a styptic pencil, but for larger areas, if you're not familiar. There's other blocks and bars, and even offerings out there. I suggest you choose carefully, because you're applying this directly onto freshly shaved skin; you want QUALITY here, and you have to trust the manufacturer. Those reasons are why I chose the Proraso alum block. It's made in Italy by Proraso: It's got that famous Proraso quality, and I trust that it's alum, not a shady alum substitute, made in a country renowned for questionable business practices and ethics. I bought this 4 years ago and I still use it regularly for both nick relief and for general aftershave care. Works well in both regards, stopping small bleeds quickly, disinfecting more serious nicks prior to the old toilet paper trick, and keeping my face clean, bump free, and less irritated after a close shave. The original box is starting to show signs of degradation (alum buildup, loss of structural integrity, etc.) but it's made of cardstock and has travelled a lot, so that's to be expected. The stone has shrunk and smoothed out, but again, expected after 4 years of use. An essential part of any home wet shaving kit with a permanent place in my medicine cabinet and toiletry travel bag.
