RAM Mount System Great for Bike or Car + Future Proofed
I originally was looking for something just for my bike. I eventually came across the RAM Mount system. I blew it off at first because of cost and was looking just for a bike solution. But the more I looked at this vs. $10-25 bike-only units, I realized the real power of the modular approach. The cradle locks in my Samsung Galaxy S4 with a UAG case rock solid. I've been on dirt and paved roads on my bike - initially I was nervous but now I don't give it a second thought after a summer of riding. I'm not mountain or BMX biking over jumps or down hill courses, but for the average rider this is more than fine. My wife has had me order one for her bike now too. I got the U-Bolt for my bike with a 1 inch arm. I found this was more than enough to try various different positions until I settled on one. The ball joint system in general gives you a lot more positioning options than others solutions or cradles. I then got a their low profile suction cup for the car, which allows me to just undo one screw on the arm and move the whole cradle and arm to the car. It isn't like a quick snap in/out but unless you are completely lazy, it is not a big hassle. In fact, I'm thinking about getting a second cradle just for the car. But if you are cheap, then this moving it back and forth is easy. Getting the phone in and out of the cradle itself is even easier, partially on the bike. A little more challenging in my car but that is because of my Honda Civic 07's very deep dashboard. I'm getting a longer arm for the car for this very reason and I knew that might be the case even before I ordered. But was confident the modular system would allow me to customize as needed. Very solidly built, I feel I got my money's worth in materials alone. Long term looks promising but have to just wait and see how ist stands up over the years. I'm pretty confident I won't be getting a much larger phone than the S4's 5 inch screen as I feel something like the Note/fablet is too big for my pocket. Which is one thing I liked - this holds my case-less iPod Touch 5 and HTC 8S Windows phone just fine. I feel confident any future phone I might get will work with this. Note my Nexus 7 2013 will NOT fit in this (I'm a web developer so I have lots of gadgets). When I have my phone in the cradle, there is the ability to s*** (turn) the phone about 15 degrees. I have not noticed this being a problem on a bike or car vibration knocking it out of position. I've taken it on 25 mile rides over potholed roads and in 8 hour drives in the car without it moving. Some might consider it even a convenience. How big your phone is will impact this however. It is marked Made in USA, and as far as I can tell they do have manufacturing facilities in the US so it doesn't appear to be just designed in the USA and manufactured in China. I wish they would verify or make this more clear on their site (or Wiki). Overall, very happy with my purchase and I've already ordered more RAM products. Read more
