For anyone choosing to buy a storage device from anywhere for any reason, I highly recommend data recovery (I would even consider it imperative), and Rescue Data was well worth the small additional cost to the purchase. After spending 2 days on the phone with the customer service of the drive I had purchased, I had all but given up hope on being able to recover my 1.5TB of data on a 20-month old drive. My last hope was that I had bought a Rescue Data Recovery plan. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone when I called to submit a claim assuaged my concerns in a moment, with more confidence than any of the customer service reps I spoke with (no slight to them, they probably thought the data was lost as well). He let me know that the lab has an 85% success rate of data recovery and that if they aren't able to recover it, the customer receives a form of compensation to help make up for the loss. The process takes about a month, which was a bit hard to swallow, but without the data recovery I would be going a lot longer than a month without access to my files. I quickly shipped off my drive and tried to keep my expectations low to avoid disappointment. Lo and behold, a month later, I received word that my data was recovered successfully and they were shipping it back on a new drive. I haven’t checked every one of my files, but it looks like they were retrieved without corruption! I have a large variety of file types (documents and images/videos of course, but also 3D software project files and obj/fbx, as well as pretty much every Adobe creative software), and all seem to run with no problem. A few extra dollars up front with the purchase of the drive has saved me a lot of grief in the long run! I will always be purchasing a Rescue Data Recovery Plan when I purchase new data storage. I've purchased this Rescue Plan for two other Hard Drives in my possession, all three drives purchased from Amazon. While I have NOT yet had to make use of this plan on any of my drives, I feel better having the plan in place, just in case a drive fails and I need Recovery Assistance. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing a Rescue Plan for Data Recovery of ANY External Drive. Read more

This product was recommended to buy when I bought my "Western Digital 22TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive, USB 3.0 external hard drive for plug-and-play storage - WDBWLG0220HBK-NESN." I hope I never have to use it, but from the reviews I read prior to buying, it sounds like a great deal and that the tech support is excellent. Read more

I only realized after purchasing that this says "16GB" -- there are questions about it on this page but the answers are not very clear. I emailed the vendor directly and their answer was to "rest assured that a plan is available for drives with more than 16GB" -- but that didn't quite answer the question about whether *this* plan that I had just purchased would cover a larger drive or not. I ended up having to talk to them by phone. They were very helpful, actually, and allowed me to cancel my purchase and buy the 2-year plan that covers larger drives instead. So I'm happy in the end -- I just think that their email communications are not very clear and that instead of saying that the plan is available they should specify that a *different* plan is available, not this one. They don't have a 3 year plan for larger drives, so if you have a larger drive, look for the "Rescue 2 Year Data Recovery Service Plan - External Hard Drives". Then don't forget to register your drive within 30 days, otherwise the insurance isn't valid. Read more

My story: I purchased this plan when I bought my 8TB HDD. Yes, I bumped it off my desk. Then I cried, so I took it to Best Buy Geek Squad they told me it could be starting at $$ 500 to recover the Data. I said I'll wait and see what I have on Backup I had a little bit Not Everything. Then I realized I had forgotten I had the Rescue - 3 Year Data Recovery Plan. I called customer support with plan Information, and they were very beneficial to my issue. - The PLAN is well worth the price. If you purchase anything and they offer this plan, DO IT. Read more

I've learned to always purchase a warranty when buying a hard drive because hard drives are so unreliable. If you forget to back up something and it crashes, you are screwed. Having the warranty doesn't guarantee you'll get your data, but the one time we've used it, we did. And we're using it a second time, because we bought a hard drive that crashed less than a month after purchasing. So, these warranties really save you the cost in hiring a vendor to retrieve your info. Too bad hard drives can't be more reliable. Read more
