I'm a former hard contact lens wearer, and I've had catact/lens replacement, detached retina-- 4 eye surgeries total. My current condition is technically not dry eye, but spending way too much time on the computer caused my upper lids to stick to the cornea at night. This ointment is by far the best nighttime option for effectiveness and price, unless you want to go with an ointment that has a good % of mineral oil-- which is more challenging to clean up in the morning. My cornea was damaged from this latest condition, and I'm not telling anyone else what to do, but the key for me was lifting the upper lid, and applying most of the ointment to the inside of the UPPER lid. (The lower lid doesn't move, so it doesn't do a good job of moving ointment around as you blink. It just serves as a cushion for the upper lid, so applying ointment there was not effective for me.) After fighting that for 2 years, if I can stay off the computer during the day, I might not need the product at all that night, but I've learned to know when I need it, and this is the only ointment I will use.
