Love Satechi products. This is another great one.

Purchased direct from Satechi. Works great, however, when selecting your ssd, note that Samsung Magician (monitoring software) doesn’t support its SSD’s in external enclosures. Another strange thing is that the activity light was constantly flashing (worrisome.) I pared down apps and widgets setup to run on login and that fixed it. I think it was a widget. I also have the Satechi hub (which includes space for an SSD.) I chose not to install an SSD in the hub (for now) as I wanted the faster speed of THIS enclosure. Read more

Choose SSD wisely

Design: Ok Performance: Great Reliability: Good Compatibility: Neutral Turns out for my use case (moving home folder to this externalSSD) there is a serious issue with macOS and it's not Satechi's fault. It's the SSD manufacturer. I went with the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB and ran into an issue where the drive would disconnect overnight. This caused serious issues with macOS and iCloud. The issue seems to be DarkWake where the OS tries to put the SSD to sleep and then when certain services try to access the wake time is too slow causing OS issues. It would be nice if Satechi would add this detail so users are aware and can choose the best MVNe SSD for their use case... Apparently the HK Hynix P31 Gold is the ideal choice however the one and only Amazon seller has horrible ratings and I would not trust buying from them (especially with a store name of "Customers R Golden") AI Research details: SAMSUNG 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen4 This is a sleep / DarkWake + disk power-management interaction causing the external NVMe to momentarily disappear while macOS expects it to be present. Really nice and goes with the Apple Mac mini M4. It is easy to setup and the cable works well with this combination. I added a 4 Tb WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe drive. I was concerned that the drive and housing was getting too hot but ran measurements and they held at 109 degrees constantly while moving hundreds of files from older drives. Very poor design. extremely disappointed in Satechi. I use a lot of their products ( hub for Mac Mini 4, Keyboard, mouse, aluminum monitor stand and they are high quality parts. This SSD enclosure gets extremely hot to the touch, and disconnects. I am using a Panasonic NVMe 2TB SSD, which is a high quality SSD. Read more

I followed the installation instructions precisely and used a high-quality WD Black NVMe SSD. Despite this, the enclosure repeatedly disconnected. I suspect overheating issues—even though the enclosure is advertised as sleek with a premium aluminum design, it didn’t seem to adequately cool the drive.
