My former espresso maker sputtered and gave out its last spurts of flavor, so I started hunting for an under $100 machine. I read reviews here and elsewhere. I watched videos. I read online threads policed by coffee snobs and tempered by coffee drinkers. I was strongly considering a different Spacekey machine, when this one popped up. I read the few reviews. I read all the product information, and when the price dipped to below $100 with tax, I pressed “buy”. The features that initially persuaded me were: the 39 oz reservoir, the ability to dispense just hot water, the stainless steel build (not just stainless appearing plastic), the 20 bars of pressure, the gauge, and the overall size. None of these were disappointments once I received this machine. Unboxing was easy (too easy, it shipped in an unsealed manufacturer’s box - not even taped shut, that partially came open in shipping), set up was very quick. I followed the instructions and did a few rounds of just hot water. Then it was time for the christening shot. The filter has a nifty feature I have not experienced before: a small notch that allows you to lock it in place when you insert it into the portafilter. No more knocking the filter into the trash! The portafilter was easily locked into place. It has a longer handle than any portafilter I have used in the past. I do not find it an issue. The machine is not heavy, so I do have to steady it as I attach and remove the portafilter. But, I also have the machine sitting on a silicone mat with raised nubs, so that may be affecting things. Either way, it’s not an issue. It’s physics: higher center of gravity - a trade off for the narrow footprint. The machine quickly warms up and is ready for use. For a double shot (my preference), hold the 2 cup icon button until the machine beeps. It’s far quieter than my last machine. And the espresso? Far smoother. The “bitter bite” I didn’t know my former machine was creating is gone. I now have the best espresso I have ever made at home (and I have been using budget friendly espresso makers for 40 years or so) with a creamy, decadent crema.
