Ultra-Portable Knife Sharpener Assemble Use Anywhere with 4 Diamond Stones 240 to 2000 Grit Angle Adjustable Magnetic Clamp

I was looking for a compact, portable sharpening solution for my gear bag and decided to give this kit a try. It certainly delivers on the "ultra-portable" promise, but there are some significant trade-offs in terms of precision and ease of use. The kit is impressively compact, though the overall design and carrying case feel a bit clunky. It clearly mimics established high-end guided sharpening systems, but in a scaled-down, travel-friendly format. For camping, backpacking, or a survival kit, it’s a functional backup that won't take up much space. The kit includes four diamond stones - 240, 400, 800, and 2000 grit with a good range from coarse to fine. While it does put an edge on a blade, the lack of precision means I wouldn’t recommend using this on your high-end kitchen cutlery or prized collector knives. It’s better suited for emergencies and outdoor gear. Setting up the unit requires installing a very tiny set screw with an included hex wrench. This screw is extremely easy to lose, especially if you're trying to assemble the unit outdoors or in low light. The magnet that holds the knife is strong, but to avoid scratching my blades, I found it necessary to place a piece of painter's tape over the magnet before attaching the blade. Although it advertises a range of 10° to 25°, there are no markings or indicators on the unit to tell you what angle you are actually at. I had to use the "Sharpie method" (marking the edge and doing light passes) to find the original bevel. Without a separate digital angle finder, setting it with any accuracy is purely guesswork. The good — It’s very compact and travel-friendly with a good variety of diamond grits (240 to 2000) and the magnet base holds the blade securely. The not so good — No visual indicators for angle adjustment. Tiny set screw is easy to lose in the field. Potential to scratch blades without taping the blade or sharpener base. Precision is lacking for high-end maintenance. This is a decent "emergency" sharpener for a camping, survival, or a garage backup, but for routine maintenance at home, there are better, more precise options available at this price point. This is for item B0G4MJLP6J: Ultra-Portable Knife Sharpener/ordered at $68.79, currently $39.99 This portable sharpening system, which weighs 1.8 lbs. (0.82 kg), should be just for that. This is something to use when away from home and you need to sharpen a knife. I do not consider it convenient enough to assemble, use at home, and disassemble again--or provide the sharpening you would expect if looking to obtain something like this. First, the five-star part in this system is the magnet. That is a winner which grabs hold of the knife and does not let it move--or let you move it easily. Unfortunately, that is balanced by the zero-star arm assembly. The set screw that holds the two sections together is too long for it to stay within during assembly. So it needs to come out for the two pieces to be fitted together. Then you put it back in and tighten with the provided hex wrench, which is only 0.055 in. (1.4 mm) wide. If you do not keep the wrench and set screw together through this process, though, it is difficult to handle the screw by itself because of its small size. I consider this poor design work and oversight that never caught the problem. The instructions are not easy to follow, and the illustration which labels the parts is on the opposite side of the sheet from the written directions. Flipping the page back and forth is inconvenient. Also, when closing the box after disassembly, it is hard keeping the parts in their compartments. If the assembled system sharpens well it apparently takes practice to hone your skill and the knife. Read more
