I took my dog to the vet years ago and my vet gave me Zymox Otic to cure his ear infection. It worked as prescribed. Later, I noticed I could get this without a prescription through a vet supplier online. Double take - WHAT? Zymox has gone up in price by about 33% since I first started purchasing it online, but it's still cheaper than a vet visit! My current golden retriever got her first ear infection - and it was pretty brown goopy before I realized it was bothering her. I ordered Zymox and started immediately. 1x a day, squirt in ear, massage the ear / work around (you will hear squish, squish, squish), and then wipe excess with a tissue. Do NOT use q-tips or shove anything in your dog's ear! As stuff (brown goop) would come out of her ear and goop up the hair, I'd take a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide on it and wipe it from the hair under her ears (NOT inside the ear). There is no grease created by Zymox - which is one of the biggest turnoffs of regular ear drops. I love that this is for multiple types of ear infections and will clear them all up. I saved $ by not going to the vet for her ear infection (if you're not sure what's going on - by all means, GO to the vet), and I have a happy dog. It has taken about 1.5 weeks for the infection to subside almost completely. It wasn't a horrible ear infection - but beyond where I would have liked to have noticed it. I'm not sure why people say they're using an entire bottle for an ear infection... how big are your dog's ears?? Enough to slosh around is fine - you don't need to fill it so it's weeping back out of the ear canal. Just a good strong squirt and manually work it around, and you're fine! You will also find that there is no stinging, burning or itching from this product. Your dog will NOT run when you pull this out. My dog will actually come to me - knowing that it soothes her ear (hydrocortisone). Not the same as an ear cleaner - this is a treatment. But Zymox does make an ear cleaner for healthy ears, and we use that for ear cleaning. I highly recommend this. It has a decent shelf life, too. The bottle I got is good until 2022! If your dog is a swimmer or is prone to ear infections - keep a bottle on hand. Treat when any sign of goop is present. The earlier the better for all. Read more
My very floppy eared beagle flipped over her ear and to my horror it was torn up; red, swollen & very irritated. She obviously had an infection and had been scratching at it. I felt terrible I didn’t notice it sooner. I bought the zymox otic because it’s a cleaner and treatment all in one and has hydrocortisone which I knew she needed badly to bring down the swelling from scratching at it. The medicine is a clear watery gel, something I wasn’t expecting. I thought it would just be liquid. The gel works great though because it suspends in place so you can really get to every little fold and crevice inside the dogs ear. I started with the outside of the ear cleaning as I went with cotton balls. Once I had all the little pieces of scab cleaned up I went for the ear canal. It says to fill the ear canal with medicine and then wipe away. I filled it and then massaged the ear to make sure it went deep enough. I then tilted the dogs head the other direction and let it drain out and wipe wipe wipe. The next morning was a big difference!! It was looking a lot better. I was still nervous though what if it didn’t work. When we woke up the 3rd morning I checked her ear and it looked so good I had to do a double take to make sure I had the right ear. I can’t recommend this medicine enough. We are continuing treat. It says 7-14 days but looking at these results I think a week will be plenty. I just wanted to leave this review to help other dog and cat parents. This medicine treats fungal and bacterial infections using 3 types of enzymes so you are good to go using this either way. I highly recommend! Worth every penny! Update* after reading some of the 1 star reviews I just wanted to add that it is always best to have your animal evaluated by a veterinarian. Some animals may need an antibiotics to treat an ear infection and this treatment may not be enough. Also if you see that your animal is suffering from any adverse reactions it is best to stop the medicine and have them evaluated medically immediately. Just like with humans, some medicines can have side effects that can be severe. Not all medicines work for everybody or everything 100% of the time. People and animals alike can be allergic to certain ingredients. It is best to closely monitor your animal whenever they are taking a new medication whether prescribed by a vet or bought over the counter and even when it’s something as simple as a topical medication. This medication worked great for my pet but I do check my dogs ears weekly because she’s a floppy eared breed. More than likely I caught the infection very early when she was symptomatic for only a couple of days. This may have contributed to how successful the results were for my dog. On day 4 now and all symptoms are gone, however I will continue to monitor the ear for up to 4 weeks to make sure the infection doesn’t reoccur. I’m very sorry to the pet owners who had adverse reactions to this medicine and that you didn’t share the same experience myself and many others had with this efficacy of how well this product worked. Your reviews are the reason that I felt it necessary to remind people that medical intervention first is always best. Read more
