Aromas of Aleppo

The Legendary Cuisine of Syrian Jews

Poopa Dweck

When the Aleppian Jewish community migrated from the ancient city of Aleppo in historic Syria and settled in New York and Latin American cities in the early 20th century, it brought its rich cuisine and vibrant culture. Most Syrian recipes and traditions, however, were not written down and existed only in the minds of older generations. Poopa Dweck, a first generation Syrian–Jewish American, has devoted much of her life to preserving and celebrating her community's centuries–old legacy. Dweck relates the history and culture of her community through its extraordinary cuisine, offering more than 180 exciting ethnic recipes with tantalizing photos and describing the unique customs that the Aleppian Jewish community observes during holidays and lifecycle events. Among the irresistible recipes are: •Bazargan–Tangy Tamarind Bulgur Salad •Shurbat Addes–Hearty Red Lentil Soup with Garlic and Coriander •Kibbeh–Stuffed Syrian Meatballs with Ground Rice •Samak b'Batata–Baked Middle Eastern Whole Fish with Potatoes •Sambousak–Buttery Cheese–Filled Sesame Pastries •Eras bi'Ajweh–Date–Filled Crescents •Chai Na'na–Refreshing Mint Tea Like mainstream Middle Eastern cuisines, Aleppian Jewish dishes are alive with flavor and healthful ingredients–featuring whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and olive oil–but with their own distinct cultural influences. In Aromas of Aleppo, cooks will discover the best of Poopa Dweck's recipes, which gracefully combine Mediterranean and Levantine influences, and range from small delights (or maza) to daily meals and regal holiday feasts–such as the twelve–course Passover seder.

The International Jewish Cook Book (Annotated)

Enriched Edition. Kosher Family Recipes and Jewish Holiday Dishes from Ashkenazi, Sephardic, European, and American Kitchens

Florence Kreisler Greenbaum

Florence Kreisler Greenbaum's *The International Jewish Cook Book* is both a practical culinary manual and a cultural archive, gathering recipes associated with Jewish communities across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the wider diaspora. Its organization reflects the emerging modern cookbook: systematic, accessible, and attentive to soups, breads, preserves, holiday dishes, household menus, and everyday economy. At the same time, its international scope places Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions in conversation, revealing how Jewish cuisine preserves religious observance while adapting to local ingredients and domestic habits. The book belongs to the early twentieth-century tradition of immigrant and ethnic cookery books, in which recipes function as records of memory, migration, and communal identity. Greenbaum writes from the perspective of a knowledgeable Jewish homemaker and culinary compiler, translating inherited practices into a form suitable for modern kitchens. Her work reflects a period when Jewish families, particularly in the United States, were negotiating continuity and assimilation: kosher principles, festival customs, and regional flavors could be retained even as cooking methods, available ingredients, and household expectations changed. The cookbook's breadth suggests an effort to document a living, diverse tradition rather than reduce Jewish food to a single regional style. Recommended for readers interested in food history, Jewish studies, domestic culture, and migration, this volume rewards both practical consultation and scholarly reading. It offers recipes, but also an unusually intimate account of how a dispersed people made identity tangible through preparation, observance, and shared meals. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience. - Hand‐picked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

Miriam's Kitchen

A Memoir

Elizabeth Ehrlich

Like many Jewish Americans, Elizabeth Ehrlich was ambivalent about her background. She identified with Jewish cultural attitudes, but not with the institutions; she had fond memories of her Jewish grandmothers, but she found their religious practices irrelevant to her life. It wasn't until she entered the kitchen--and world--of her mother-in-law, Miriam, a Holocaust survivor, that Ehrlich began to understand the importance of preserving the traditions of the past. As Ehrlich looks on, Miriam methodically and lovingly prepares countless kosher meals while relating the often painful stories of her life in Poland and her immigration to America. These stories trigger a kind of religious awakening in Ehrlich, who--as she moves tentatively toward reclaiming the heritage she rejected as a young woman--gains a new appreciation of life's possibilities, choices, and limitations.

Culinary Landmarks

A Bibliography of Canadian Cookbooks, 1825-1949

Elizabeth Driver

Culinary Landmarks is a definitive history and bibliography of Canadian cookbooks from the beginning, when La cuisinière bourgeoise was published in Quebec City in 1825, to the mid-twentieth century. Over the course of more than ten years Elizabeth Driver researched every cookbook published within the borders of present-day Canada, whether a locally authored text or a Canadian edition of a foreign work. Every type of recipe collection is included, from trade publishers' bestsellers and advertising cookbooks, to home economics textbooks and fund-raisers from church women's groups. The entries for over 2,200 individual titles are arranged chronologically by their province or territory of publication, revealing cooking and dining customs in each part of the country over 125 years. Full bibliographical descriptions of first and subsequent editions are augmented by author biographies and corporate histories of the food producers and kitchen-equipment manufacturers, who often published the books. Driver's excellent general introduction sets out the evolution of the cookbook genre in Canada, while brief introductions for each province identify regional differences in developments and trends. Four indexes and a 'Chronology of Canadian Cookbook History' provide other points of access to the wealth of material in this impressive reference book.
