Frank Baum The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Originally published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900, it has since been reprinted numerous times, most often under the name The Wizard of Oz, which is the name of both the popular 1902 Broadway musical and the well-known 1939 film adaptation. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone. The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated. Its initial success, and the success of the 1902 Broadway musical which Baum adapted from his original story, led to Baum's writing thirteen additional Oz books. The original book has been in the public domain in the US since 1956.

Children's Classics

L. Frank Baum, John R. Neill

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is the fourth book set in the Land of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by John R. Neill. It was published on June 18, 1908 and reunites Dorothy with the humbug Wizard from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). This is one of only two of the original fourteen Oz books (the other being The Emerald City of Oz (1910), to be illustrated with watercolor paintings. Baum, having resigned himself to writing a series of Oz books, set up elements of this book in the prior Ozma of Oz (1907). He was not entirely pleased with this, as the introduction to Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz opens with the protest that he knows many tales of many lands, and hoped that children would permit him to tell them those tales. Written shortly after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and around the time Baum moved to California, the book starts with an earthquake in California. Dorothy and others are swallowed up by cracks in the earth, and fall into an underground cavern, where they begin their adventures

Sky Island: Being the Further Adventures of Trot and Cap'n Bill after Their Visit to the Sea Fairies is a children's fantasy novel written by L. Frank Baum, illustrated by John R. Neill, and published in 1912 by the Reilly & Britton Company[1]-the same constellation of forces that produced the Oz books in the first decades of the twentieth century. As the full title indicates, Sky Island is a sequel to Baum's The Sea Fairies of 1911. Both books were intended as parts of a projected long-running fantasy series to replace the Oz books. Given the relatively tepid reception of the first book in the series, however, Baum tried to attract young readers by including two characters from his Oz mythos in Sky Island-Button-Bright and Polychrome, originally introduced in The Road to Oz (1909).

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

L. Frank Baum

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (1908) marked a return to form of sorts for its author L. Frank Baum. Unhappy with the previous year's publication of Ozma of Oz, and eight years removed from the publication of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum sought to reinvigorate his fledgling fantasy series with a novel true to its roots. The story begins with an earthquake. Dorothy and her companions are plunged into the world of the Mangaboos, who blame them for the disaster that has wreaked havoc on their lives and destroyed their homes. Moments before they are to be sentenced to death, the Wizard of Oz appears in an air balloon--after years of living in exile from the Emerald City--and saves Dorothy, Eureka, Zeb, and Jim. The Wizard uses sleight-of-hand to convince the Mangaboos of his powers, allowing the group to escape. Together with the wizard, Dorothy and her companions travel through the Valley of Voe, climb Pyramid Mountain, and cross the Land of the Gargoyles, only to find themselves not only farther from home than when they began, but hungry, thirsty, and at the mercy of a vicious dragon. In a last-ditch effort, Dorothy attempts to reach Princess Ozma, in the hopes that the ruler of the Emerald City will save them from certain doom. With a familiar narrative and characters new and old, L. Frank Baum's Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a sequel worthy both of its esteemed predecessor and the reader's rapt attention. Filled with rich, detailed layers of fantasy from the mind of L. Frank Baum, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a story about the frail innocence of childhood and the will to persevere that can be found in even the youngest of hearts. Long overshadowed by the film, Baum's series is required reading for children, adults with children, and adults who refuse to let life lose its flavor of fantasy. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of L. Frank Baum's Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is a classic of children's literature reimagined for modern readers.
