Doom - PC Collectors Edition

I have been a Fan of DooM since it was released way back when. When I heard this was coming out I just had to have it. I actually have purchased this game on the Xbox One, PS4 and now this edition on the PC. By far the PC version is my favorite. The graphics are so much cleaner, and you just cant beat the keyboard/mouse combo for FPS. While there are reviews for the game everywhere lets look at the actual box set. First off, the price I paid for this was a steal. 2nd the box this comes in is HUGE. The main reason to buy this version is to get the statue, and it doesn't disappoint. I have it sitting on a shelf on my computer desk and its looks sweet. It has an LED light and fan underneath to light up the statue like its standing on a fan grate. My only wish is that the switch wasn't hidden under a removable piece. Would have been nice to have it accessible at anytime. The statue is very well made and detailed. So much so my wife says its "gross". The other thing this set comes with is a Steel Box for the game. Very nice, but I wish they put in a little more effort for some inserts or something besides just the case. One thing to note, all versions of Doom for the PC you still have to download the game. It only installs a very small part, then goes on STEAM to download approx 45gigs. I wish they did not do this as most of the country is going to data caps and I was trying to avoid downloading a big game. All in all, for the price they have listed you can not go wrong. After inserting the batteries, the red lights turned on, and the fan starts to spin. Not even a hour later the fan no longer spins, and the lights stay solid red. I tried removing the batteries, re-inserting them, different batteries, and nothing. I will be contacting Amazon about this and requesting a refund. Very disappointed in the poor Q/A of this product. EDIT: After contacting Amazon, the customer support helped by sending me a replacement. Thank you Amazon. EDIT Again: I decided to give this product a 2 star review instead of 1 since the game itself is actually very good. Bethesda managaed to make DOOM more modern, but keep all the things for the most part that made DOOM great. Good job. Read more

The game: Holy crap did they nail DOOM4, the game isn't dumbed down with limited guns or regenerating health. You've also got big maps like in other old school games, where there's different routes or secret paths you can scope out. The gore is incredible, ripping and tearing enemies in half with your bear freakin' hands, chainsawing enemies in half or just gibbing them to bits with a double barrel shotgun blast. There's a lot of replayability in the game, where you can try to find more secrets or upgrade parts for your weapons. Or, heck you can find secrets and get some guns early. Er, let me back pedal a bit, yes upgrade your weapons, you get 2 parts per weapon that adds an alt fire of some kind and they have upgrades on that that you unlock with challenge points. For your shotgun you can get a grenade launcher or a burst fire mod, chaingun's alt fire will spin the barrel or the other option is to turn it into a 3 barrel-tri-chaingun that sprays bullets like a hose. Your armor upgrades are more health capacity, or armor, ammo. It's weird but, it's fine. It makes the secrets worth looking for. That said I think you can beat the game scarping by with minimal pickups. There's a bunch of difficulty options, a load of guns and ways to play. I freaking love this game. It's gorgeous, has a lot of variety, the animations are incredible. There's some concessions with the upgrades but they're not complex, it's just options to make your guns do different things. Not stats or any of the usual RPG bs you see shoved in shooters these days. It's a great game, they did a fine job and I think it's worth playing. I can't say how long I played it since I did some playing around so my steam play time isn't accurate but overall I've gotten 24 hours. I'm not a massive purist of the original DOOM games, I loved them but I also really enjoyed DOOM3 which is apparently a mixed bag for some. I think DOOM 4 sits FIRMLY on the side of DOOM1 & 2 but it's not 100% authentic ...as you can aim up and down and jump :B. Seriously, it's worth playing if you like dumb shooters like Serious Sam, Duke 3D and Pain Killer. Don't expect much of a story, there's one kinda there ...RIP AND TEAR but it's kinda off to the side while you kill things. Multiplayer: It's not good. It looks good, has some unique weapons but there's no flow to it. It feels like a generic multiplayer game with DOOM slapped on top of it. You have loadouts, with 2 weapons each with a grenade slot...Yes, seriously. Weapons don't really feel balanced and neither do matches where you can be doing well and then the OP demon power up just steam rolls you and your whole team till it runs out or you kill it. I played about 20 rounds and just didn't enjoy it. Some seem to but personally I couldn't dig it, much prefer just about any other game online. At this point I'm wondering if they're gonna kick out a new Quake to step in because this multiplayer game is just generic and dull. It's made by the guys who did CoD: Ghosts and Halo5 multiplayer, and it shows. It isn't fun. You're buying DOOM for single player and maybe the potential of SnapMap. The technical: The game runs really well on my PC on the second to highest setting at over 144fps at times. Never saw the counter drop below 120, even when the action was getting really hard and my PC isn't sporting high specs all around. Core i7 4770k 8GB ram GTX 970 3.5GB (yeah, not the 4GB they promised eh?) The highest setting apparently requires 5GB of vram and that I simply don't have. But the game looks incredible on what I'm running it on and ran smooth as silk. I had to run it windowed/borderless as (at time of posting) it doesn't seem to agree with multi-monitor set ups. But, that didn't impact my playing so all I can do is make a note of it. There's a LOT of options for scaling the visuals in this, the list of options is long. Yes, there's a FoV slider :P The collectors edition: Well, this is a bit of a mixed bag, in a good way. Amazon has helped me out but the first one I got the statue had 2 problems, the battery case was lodged on so hard that the screw head was stripped by the time I got through with it, and I needed help getting the thing off. Second problem is ...the fan wasn't working in the base, so the LEDs lit up but no cool effect. Amazon sent a replacement and it's all peachy. The statue detail is great, the molding and paint are both really good, they have a glossy finish on the meaty bits and a matte finish on the 'metal' bits. The base is detailed down to having the switch covered with a panel you can remove. It's also huge as hell, I have a few statues and figures, this one towers over all of them and won't even fit into the same area as the others. The DVD case is badass, looks way better than the default generic bland cover of the basic edition. Now...here's the problem, there's 1 DVD in the box ...and the game is 54 GB. So, hope you're ready to wait on a big, fat download because this game will take a while to get to you either way. Dunno why they didn't opt for at least a bluray but, get stuffed I guess there's no real option here you're downloading most of the game on steam. Side note: I do not recommend the Season Pass, it's for multiplayer only and I've not seen any reason to play that. Read more
