Leaving phones and other battery operated devices on the charger for too long shortens the battery life, so I’ve been looking for a convenient way to put them on the charger for a designated time. Charging them overnight while I sleep means they sit there cooking for several hours after they’re fully charged. When I saw this, I thought it would be ideal because I can set the timer for a couple hours, or however long it takes my device to charge, and then have it shut off automatically. It turns out that this device does exactly that and I don’t have to bend down to fiddle with it at the wall when I want to use it. So it works almost perfectly for my purpose. My first impression was that it’s a solid, well built product. Installation and usage couldn’t be easier. Just plug it into the wall, connect the device you want to control, and start issuing voice commands. It recognized my voice and responded properly on the first try. It only recognizes certain specific words and phrases, which is fine because they are all very intuitive. And it also comes with a handy cheat card in case I forget any of the commands. Most commands respond to multiple phrases, for example “turn on” and “power on” both activate the port. I only have use for one of these units, but I see in the manual that you can have up to five in the same room and program each one with it’s own unique “wake command”, so they can be controlled individually. And another feature that I love is that this device doesn’t talk to the internet. It’s all completely self contained. (China doesn’t need to listen in or know what time I charge my phone. :-) ) The reason I gave it four stars is that only the right 120V outlet is controllable. The left outlet and the USB ports are always on. For my use, it would have been ideal if the USB ports were also controlled by the timer. Still, that’s not that much of a problem because I just plugged my charger into the controllable outlet. Overall, this is a great solution for me. I truly appreciate having this! Perfect for older houses and for those of us who do not like to use WiFi for everything. We live in a 70's home that was wired by an ameture. We have since updated all the outlets and wall switches (after several thousands of dollars later). In our son's room, we have made the switched outlets to always be on instead of being controlled by the wall switch. The wall switch since had to be disconnected for reasons too lengthy to explain. So therefore, he has to manually turn on his floor lamps. There is also a ceiling fan light with a pull chain which was never controlled by the wall switch at all, because again, ameture. However, because they had wired everything so incorrectly and backwards, in order to get the ceiling fan to be controlled by that wall switch, it was more hassle and more money than we had already spent -- it is that asinine what they did to this otherwise nice house -- so we never replaced the switch. Enter this Emerson plug. Since our son doesn't have a wall switch, but needs several lamps, he can now just walk in his room using the wake words "Hey Emerson", and he has lights, instead of manually turning them all on. Since he's been using this plug, he hasn't been leaving lights on, which makes us parents very happy. He loves to be able to walk out of his room telling the switch to turn off the lights as if by magic. The timer is something I have to look into further. Using the wake word and command would not turn on the light until I commanded it to turn off the timer. However, it still seemed delayed. I had to press the button to essentially reset it. I think it's user error, honestly. Overall, it's very intuitive. All we had to do initially was plug it in of course, and use the wake words "Hey Emerson," and it went right to work. I love not having to rely on internet and apps to have a controlled outlet plug for lights. The included USBs to charge is a welcome feature as well and more than sufficient. Pros: -it works by just plug and play and your voice -obvious light visible (if nothing plugged in tha obscures it) for when it is ready to receive commands -you don’t have to call it Emerson -it doesn’t require internet/wifi/bluetooth at all -built in on/off timer option -responds to many different types of voices (in our native English-speaking house) -feels sturdy by build quality -expands a single plug nicely Cons: -only one outlet turns on/off by voice -if you don’t call it Emerson, the only other option is calling it Plug 1 (through 5) -there is a delay required for giving commands after the wake word, making language less natural and requiring extra patience to work -way too expensive for what you get -can’t work alongside smart plugs that can be on routines controlled by Alexa, Google/Apple home, etc. This will not make most people happy and will only work for some people in narrow circumstances and isn’t a great value.
