I have had this chair for just under a year. It was fine until recently when it constantly now has to be brought back up, it just sinks all the time now, the air cylinder failing. I do not weigh anything near 500 lbs. I'm the only one who uses it, it has not been subject to any abuse. So yes, it's good for a year or so, but a chair should last much longer. I would not recommend buying this chair. Read more

The way it is worded makes it seem like the gel layer is part of the chair, it's a separate pad that come with it.
