Great fan for cooling. Like all radiant heaters it's spot heat, not really for room heating

St8koutSeptember 11, 2023

Update: It still works as advertised, but now that winter in here I'm finding out that unless you heat the whole room up, it's not going to be very comfortable just having hot air blowing along the floor. As a fan for cooling it works great, but as a heater, for the amount of power it draws, it's just not enough heat. I just ordered an oil filled design that is supposed to heat a room, not just throw out some spot heat. They seem to be more efficient because you can leave them on all the time 24/7 (they cycle on/off.) On a side note, I noticed that when I make pancakes on my cheapo but large griddle, the whole kitchen quickly gets pretty warm. I set it up in my living room and it doesn't take long to raise the room temp a few degrees. This is pretty much the same principle as those wall mounted heaters. Right off the bat, tower fans/heaters and small kids don’t mix. While it’s pretty stable, some kid is going to want to play with it, followed by yelling parents if it breaks in pieces on the floor, (it is only plastic, not metal.) I like towers over floor models because I don’t sit on the floor. I want to feel it while I’m on a couch or chair. First, the Fan mode. It’s pretty great and moves a narrow vertical beam of air right at you. 4-speeds; the 4th speed is almost too much from 5’ away, which is a good thing on a hot day. You’ll soon want to turn it down. It has an oscillating option, which I never like on fans; a steady flow of air is much better. Now the heater. I didn’t fully test this too much as it’s 82 degrees out. I just wanted to make sure it works. The heat comes out from the lower part, from 5” up to 15” from the floor. While this opposes why I wanted a tower model, it will keep your feet and legs warm. I guess they had to compromise separating the fan and heater, but it does let you run both at the same time. I used to have a smaller tower heater, and always put it in a stand so that the heat was at eye/body level when sitting. I can always put this on a stand too, (no kids). Power draw. At highest heat setting, about 13.6 amps, 1470 watts. Most homes have 15 amp breakers so you’ll probably want this on a separate circuit not shared with other gadgets. Of course, you have lower less power hungry settings, but you know how it is when you’re cold. All electric heaters are going to use a fair amount of power; there’s no “efficiency ratings” for them. All you can do is choose direct radient heat on your skin, or try to heat a whole room (obviously takes more power and a longer run time.) Radiant heat is good for sitting in one spot, watching a movie or reading, and you’re trying to keep your heating bill down. For just the fan, 44 watts to 32 Watts, high to low setting. My ceiling fan uses over twice as much power. Funny how they show a whole family gathered around it. The reality is this is more of a 1 or 2 person fan/heater, at least when it’s really cold (excuse to snuggle up) or really hot (quit hogging the fan.) Read more

Great price, quality product with good features.

Great portable heater. Tall not wide so takes up less floor space. No worries about burns. Good base so doesn't tip easily. Auto shut off. I have dogs, cats and small children so these safety features are perfect. Oscillator helps distribute air flow. Our heater went out for a week and we used this and it heated the house well. I got one for my son's bedroom where he rents and he loves it too. Read more

3 DEGREE DIFFERENTIAL NOT 2

John B Mish Jr.December 26, 2024

Manual states heater turns off after ambient temperature reaches 2 degrees after set point, as one other reviewer states this is not correct. The heater actually turns off after the temperature reaches 3 degrees after the set point. A differential is built into all heating or cooling systems to prevent short cycling, short cycling can cause accelerated wear of the thermostat components which are only rated for a finite number of cycles. Home thermostats have a 2 degree differential and shut off in heating mode after the ambient temperature rises more than 2 degrees above the set point. If you set the Lasko heater to 72 degrees the unit will be producing heat while the ambient room temperature is less than the set point or up to and including 74 degrees. Once the ambient room temperature reaches 75 degrees the heater will turn off, leaving you with a room temperature 3 degrees higher than your set point. I personally find this temperature at least mildly annoying during the daytime and a bit more annoying at night while trying to adjust the blankets while in bed. If you are more tolerant of this variation in room temperature than me this may not bother you. That being said, I have had half a dozen different brands/models/types of space heaters over the last couple of years and they ALL seem to have a 3 degree differential, so if you must have a space heater than you may not have to look any further than this model. The good news is this particular space heater is the best one I have had so far. It produces its heat quickly and is quieter than other fan assisted heaters. If you have read the other reviews and seen the pictures you will have seen some of the people have experienced melting of the plastic case. I haven’t heard of any units catching fire as a result, and at least so far in my testing I haven’t had any such issues. Some customers have filed warranty claims successfully. Yes, this is a low bar, hopefully Lasko has or will address this design issue. In the meantime depending on how you use the heater most people haven’t had this issue. That being said I would not recommend using this heater unattended. Lasko, if you are listening you need to send out a service bulletin to registered owners, and redesign your heater if you haven’t done so already. I had two different types of Govee space heaters that I recently bought from Amazon that Amazon reached out to me to notify of a recall. In both cases Govee issued a full refund. While I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the Govee heaters I was VERY impressed with Amazon’s action. Hopefully if the Lasko has a sufficient number of issues I will hear from Amazon. Back to the temperature differential ‘issue’, in practice this may not be an issue depending not only your tolerance but more importantly on the room dynamics of your particular application as well as your sleep habits. Most people will probably use the heater to supplement their heating system, when the heater is in it’s ‘sweet spot’, namely at or a couple of degrees above it’s set point, I runs in it’s low heat mode. That means resulting ambient room temperature changes may be so gradual as to not be noticable. In my testing my room stayed at the set point for half an hour or so while the heater produced a very pleasing gentle but noticeable warmth to our small TV room. In our 15 foot travel trailer where it’s our only source of heat since I prefer not to use the trailer’s propane heating system, the temperature variations are at least more rapid and noticeable, and so at least for our travel trailer I am still looking for a space heater with a narrower differential. I am experimenting with various oil filled and other types of convection heaters to see if the net ambient room temperature will be more steady. So far the oil filled heaters seem to provide a more steady temperature, if somewhat slower to go from my overnight setting of 62 to my daytime setting of 72. The Govee ceramic fan assisted heaters warmed up our 15 foot camper in a matter of minutes, until they were recalled for safety issues. I will be testing the Ballu convection heater later this week, these more expensive heaters at least on paper sound promising, being able to control from my iPhone, and/or the remote which has a built in thermometer you can use to regulate the heater instead of the thermometer attached to the power cord of the heater. I hope my rambling was helpful. Bottom line, I like this heater and will update my review if necessary. Read more
