The Oster 4655 Retro Chrome 3 speed 5 cup blender is a pretty good recreation of the classic Oster "beehive" blender from the 1950s. It is also a pretty good modern Oster blender. How does it stack up against the classic Oster blenders it is descended from? Not bad, understanding that this is a modern product made with modern methods. By that I mean that the classic Oster products of the post WWII era were designed by human beings using drafting paper, slide rules, human operated manufacturing and the materials of the day. Modern products are designed with computer assisted drafting and design tools, made in automated factories with computer controlled component manufacturing, and have the benefit, or curse, depending on how you look at it, of several revolutions in plastic forming and assembly technology that have occurred over the last fifty years. In the old days appliances were designed with an "over built" margin of error to make sure they lasted. These days, with computer assisted manufacturing that sharpens the accountants and designers pencils way beyond anything that was dreamed of fifty years ago, appliances are designed to be "good enough" to meet their expected mean time before failure. That's a pretty sharp pencil. The Oster 4655 is lighter than the classic Oster blenders of the 50s-70s and it probably won't last a hundred years like some of its ancestors. I have an Oster 460 Commercial blender from the 1970s that is built like a tank, heavy metal casing, very heavily and well chromed, excellent motor, looks almost like new after decades of use, and will probably outlast me. Will a new Oster 4655 also last as long? Doubtful. But it's good enough. Very powerful, shreds ice no problem, does not look or feel cheap, etc. Contrary to what some reviewers have stated the beehive shell is in fact metal. The base plate and skirt at the bottom of the beehive are plastic. And, the underside of the base states "Assembled In Mexico". I would of course prefer that it say "Made in USA", but at this point I a grateful to have anything in my house that does not say "Made in China". I would assume that most of the parts that were assembled in Mexico originated in China. The only complaint I might have about the Oster 4655 is that the jars do not seem to sit as firmly on the drive mount ring as in the past. But I also noticed that the screw on jar base is shaped with a taper that did not exist on the classic screw on jar bases, so this may account for the extra gap that allows the jar to wiggle a bit. End of day the Oster 4655 blender is a solid modern appliance, and if you can allow for it being designed with modern techniques, rather than over built in the old school way, you can probably feel pretty good about owning it. We had another older plastic container blender that worked fine, but the plastic had discolored to a fair degree and my wife was just not happy with anymore. So, I told her that for mother's day, our two cat's and the dog had all pitched in to get her a new one.
