My whiskers are stiff and strong but sparse. They laugh at most shavers, even blades. I had been a devotee of Norelco's 3 head design but my last wasn't too good. The head didn't open with a spring action but this one does. I had been leery of the rectangular shape of the cutters but people seem to be warming up to them so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm pleasantly surprised. Under the nose is a bother, but otherwise it's a good shave. Very good shave with the correct gel. I found dry shaving troublesome and finally settled on Dollar Shave Club Gel. It goes on slick and adding water throughout the shave really makes this shaver fly. It cleans easily with liquid hand soap. This seems it'll hold up well and last a few years. My last experiment was with a Panasonic Foil. Well made but didn't work for me. This Norelco cost less than the replacement cutters on the Panasonic. No brainer! Now, if we could just get back to the round cutter heads. Read more

I had my previous razor, an Norelco 9160 XL, close to 30 years. I discovered it sells on eBay from $210 to $270, so I sold it and purchased a Norelco Model S3242/90. Too many passes to get a close shave, returned it and purchased the 5400. I have used this 5400 close to a month and here's my thoughts: Pros: 1. Very close shave with minimum passes 2. Good battery life 3. Pretty quiet 4. Easy to clean Cons: 1. This is really bad and why I dropped a star off. (it should be more). It doesn't trim neck hairs, it pulls them out leaving a bloody painful mess. 2. Handle is quite long. It gets tiring trying to find a comfortable grip. Unlike the body styles of the 9160 and S3240 you cannot grip under the shaving heads comfortably. As far as the neck hair goes, Gillette disposal razors do the job. Read more

I bought this to replace a 15+ year-old Philips Norelco 3-head shaver that had a dying rechargeable battery (not readily replaceable due to being soldered into its connections). I was also wanting to get a little closer shave than the old shaver was delivering, which was probably due to needing new blades in the heads. This shaver delivers a much-smoother shave, and much smoother skin (i.e., much closer shave). The size is somewhat larger than my old shaver, and I wish that it came with a protective pouch like the old one, but it handles very well, has great shaving results, and even the trimmer part cuts better and closer than the old model. This one also does not have a separate wall adapter, but instead comes with a USB (A type) cable for charging. If you have a built-in outlet with USB charging ports, you can just plug it in there. Otherwise, you need to provide a USB charging adapter, such as one from an old phone (like I am using) or sold for such purposes. Charging could also be done from a USB port in a car, airport, plane, etc., if you need to charge it while traveling. The shaving end has larger shave heads than my old one, and is said to be waterproof, so it could be used by those who shave larger surfaces, like heads or torsos or legs. Compared to the old model, the shaver is also much easier to clean, as the flip-open top has only a shallow, mostly-flat recess where the accumulated cut off hairs reside until removal. The lack of deep, hard-to-reach spaces means that it will not perpetually have fine hair bits down in deep holes, shaft holes, or corners in the head-support volume. Read more
