I used this pen doing field work in a bog (wetland, swamp) for several weeks and it was great. It never bled, worked on wet paper and in odd positions (upside down). I highly recommend this for anyone who does a lot of writing outside. The pen is small enough that it fits in my leather man case next to my leather man so I can keep it on my belt. It also transitions nicely to fitting in a small purse when i go out! Read more

This pen has an incredibly premium feel to it. The matte black finish on the brass gives it a nice texture, and it doesn’t rub off either. The pen is interesting, I keep trying to write flat despite knowing it can write upside down. The ink doesn’t smear. I haven’t written in grease or water yet, but I’m sure it will preform just as well as on paper. Read more

This is the BEST Rite in the Rain pen... I bought the cheaper (appx half the price of this one) RITR pen (the one that you click to use) and it does, in fact, write, but that's about where the usefulness ends. For $10-$11, it is extremely cheap and broke in half in my bag. This pen, however, is strong, writes nicely, is compact when stored, won't break, and is comfortable in the hand when writing. It is worth every penny. Also, if you're in need of a compact and discreet weapon, this should fit the bill nicely. it is not a tactical pen, but would do the job in a pinch. Read more

This is my third one of these...I have lost the others. It goes in your front pocket so easy you hardly know it's there. It has never leaked even when it is really hot and I'm working. I have even bashed it while carrying lumber, concrete blocks, etc and it never breaks or leaks. This is my first time getting it on amazon (I think) but it is the same as the previous ones straight from "rite in the rain". It always writes; cold, hot, damp, etc. It never leaves globs. The ink lasts a long time, I've never run one dry, I usually lose it first. I don't do much pen and paper with smart phones now, but when I need to, I always have it. Beats having a regular pen in your breast pocket or neck cuff, etc. Those always bleed and ruin shirts. Read more

This review is based on an orange version bought in mid-2017, and the number of stars assigned is mainly due to customer service. I have several Fisher space pens in different finishes, but this is my first Rite in the Rain. The Rite in the Rain is slightly longer when closed (~1/4 inch) but the same size as the Fisher when open and posted. The metal seems slightly thicker. The orange paint feels almost like a baked ceramic finish. I love the look and originally thought it would wear well; however, the paint has chipped off and continues to flake away where the friction of the pen cap rubs against the portion right beneath the rubber gasket when closed. This is a clear disadvantage compared to the Fishers’ finish. The paint flaking off alone is a deal-breaker and the reason my original rating from 2017 (four stars) has been lowered to one. There is also a rattle that has developed, which I’ve never had in my Fishers. I've found a lot of variation in how tightly the cap fits when closed among my Fishers, and I'd put this Rite in the Rain at medium to high tightness - started a little loose for my taste but has actually tightened over time. This could vary a little based on climate and season. The ink flow is slightly slower to start but less likely to bead up at the tip than my Fishers. Once writing the ink feels a little slicker than my other space pens and therefore writes a little smoother. UPDATE: Contacted Rite in the Rain about the issues I was having, and they were receptive, said they were having issues with this particular type of pen, and they offered a replacement with one of their other variations. Gave them my info, but at first never received the replacement. Reached out a couple more times again and eventually received their orange full-sized clicky pen as a replacement (thank you Rite in the Rain!). Clicky pen has a soft spring for my taste, but writes smooth and has barely any rattle in open or closed position. Seems like well-fitting parts and a great orange pen so far. Read more
