I ordered this San Jamar Escali Kitchen Scale for two main reasons. My old, current scale doesn’t allow me to toggle between units of measure without having to remove the food and re-weigh it, which is annoying when I try out a new recipe that lists cups and ounces, not grams. It also has a tendency to fluctuate when I weigh some foods, even though I put in new batteries. This Escali kitchen scale is very lightweight because it’s mostly plastic, and it’s good it has nonslip feet. It comes with 2 AA batteries. You can apparently order a 9V adapter that’s sold separately, but I don’t see where you’d connect it. The Product Manual is written in 3 languages. The platform’s diameter is only 5 ¼,” not six inches, as stated on the product page. You have to move your plate, pot, etc. as far back as possible to be able to see the display. I already knew the weight capacity of this Escali scale is 11 lbs. When I weighed a large stockpot and a 12 lb. Dutch oven to verify weight capacity, I had to turn on a flashlight to get clear photos of the weight measurements of each. The ½” digital numbers aren’t easily seen in low light conditions because I don’t believe they are backlit as stated in the product page. I turned off my kitchen’s overhead light to compare the Escali with my old scale, when I set them both on my countertop. I’m pleased Escali allows me to easily switch between units of weight when I follow a recipe or spoon portions of food. However, it’s just as important for me to efficiently see the digital numbers on the display. IMHO, this San Jamar Escali Kitchen Scale is an adequate scale, although a bit expensive at the current price of $29.99, when a similar Amazon Basics Digital Kitchen Scale is only $11.49 and also doesn’t have a “Special Feature: Backlit Display.” Read more

Plastic is actually a GOOD thing with this scale... I normally like steel and other metals, but this makes the smaller scales lighter and easier to clean. The scale is accurate measured with scientific weights, so I KNOW that the portions of recipe ingredients will remain constant and accurate. I love that it can use both power sources, (DC Adapter or batteries...), because the batteries seem to last forever, but in those times that I spend in the church kitchen, have the A/C option is really appropriate. Very basic digital scale, works fine but nothing to write about in the looks department. I don't suppose you really need a scale to look fancy, but if it's something you were looking to gift I would maybe look for something else since this is so basic it almost felt like a toy when I first opened it. It does work perfectly fine, though, so no complaints there. I'm not a baker or anything so I don't need precise measurements, but every now and again something comes up where I need a scale and I can't believe I don't have one, so this is more of a keep-it-in-the-back-of-the-drawer kind of tool for me and I am content with how easy it is to set up and use, and that it's rechargeable so you don't have to worry about the batteries if you store it for awhile.
