Great budget starter sleeping bag

I have done a fair bit of camping in my day and have used many different kinds of sleeping bags. There is a certain gold standard with name brand bags where you can just feel the quality when you touch the exterior. This is not that bag. However, for its current price ($35) I don’t think it’s trying to be. It is an entry level, decent all around sleeping bag for warm weather or non rugged use. The good: -It does its job in insulating heat in a chilly environment. This bag is the same material inside and out, thus it’s not providing the warm fuzzies for those REALLY cold nights. It will get you by in sub 30 degrees only if you’re wearing layers while you sleep. -It’s lightweight and isn’t hard to stuff back in the bag. Some other sleeping bags by comparison have a storage bag that barely fits it right and it gets ANNOYING. -It has a zipper and cinch for the hood. This is a plus but more on this in the negative section. The bad: -It’s noticeably cheap. The material is thin and they cut corners where they could. I don’t think the overall construction is poor, but I wouldn’t expect this sleeping bag to last more than 2 or 3 years of heavy use. -The storage bag is PAPER thin and split when I opened the box. Not the end of the word but just something to note. -It is a small sleeping bag. I am a normal sized adult male (about 200lbs) and I can’t wiggle too much in the bag when it’s zipped up. It is not meant for larger individuals or multiple people. There is plenty of length but not width. -The zipper and draw string quality are bare bones. They function and they haven’t broke on mine yet, but I have a feeling that they won’t last very long. They also tend to be poor resistors of pressure. Ex. If you’re fully cinched up and zipped most of the way up, don’t be surprised if you wake up with the zipper all the way at the bottom and the cinch completely loose. Just a byproduct of the price in my mind. Overall, it’s a good sleeping bag. It will keep you warm on a casual camping trip and can function as a blanket if that’s needed. Beyond that, it is low price because that what it is: budget tier. Does not punch above its weight in any category but meets expectations in my opinion. Read more

Great bag to keep in the car for winter safety

I’ve owned a bunch of sleeping bags. Everything from expensive super-light down bags to the cheapest general use bags. When evaluating sleeping bags, one has to look at a few factors. Price-point, who will use it, and how it will be used are some things to consider. In the world of sleeping bags, weight, type of fill, materials and quality of construction vary greatly as price changes and it wouldn’t be fair to judge a $300 expedition-quality bag against a $30 bag without taking price into consideration. Having said that, this bag is a lower-priced bag. This bag is quite heavy. It weighs 5.3 pounds, according to two different scales I own. It obviously uses bonded polyester bats as fill, and I’m skeptical that they are truly hollow fibers -due to the weight. As such, the bag will not ‘loft-up’ after you unroll it. It will not gain loft if you try to ‘fluff’ it. It likely won’t gain any loft if you tumble it in a dryer all day long. If you grab the fill through the outer and inner fabric you can feel the bonded fill layer. If you pull on it as if to expand it, you can feel and hear ‘tearing’ as the bonding of the fibers in the batting lets go. So… this is a very ‘flat’, relatively dense bag and it stores better by rolling than by stuffing. It arrived rolled. Bear in mind that you will have to roll it very tightly to get it back in the ‘stuff’ sack. The zippers seem sturdy enough and general construction is pretty decent. No real complaints there at this price. This style of bag includes a half-circle ‘apron’ portion at the top for your head to rest on and a drawstring with cord stopper to cinch it as a ‘hood’. I am very much a fan of this style, as you can seal out the cold as with a mummy type bag, but you have much more room to move your feet. I have slept in it for one night in mild conditions (mid 60’sF), and found the bag to be quite comfortable. The interior fabric feels great against the skin. I think this bag could be used *comfortably* down into the 50’s depending on what you’re wearing to sleep in. Much lower temps in a ‘survival’ situation (but you’d be chilly). Having said that, this bag is most definitely not for backpacking, or even space-sensitive use. If I were evaluating it for such applications, it would get one star. It’s just too bulky and heavy. It is, however, well-suited for car camping, kids and general use. It’s a great bang-around fairly tough bag that I am currently keeping in the car for winter safety as it can be a blanket or a bag. Lightweight sleeping bag is a 3 season bag unless supplemented with a heat source..

This sleeping bag is great for warmer weather camping and trail use, but falls short during cold weather below 40 degrees. Its lightweight material and compact stuff sack makes it easy to pack and carry on long hikes. The ability to fully unzip it into a flat blanket was useful around the campfire and inside my tent on milder nights. However, labeling it as suitable for four seasons feels misleading. My experience confirmed it lacks sufficient insulation for true cold weather. On a night dipping to freezing, even inside a tent, It left me cold. It only became comfortable once I used my pellet stove. It excels as a three-season bag or for summer use, and the blanket function adds real value. Only consider use in the winter if you have supplemental heat for your tent, which most cold weather campers will have. Adding an inflatable mattress also help significantly. Bottom Line: This lightweight sleeping bag offers significant advantages in portability and versatility, particularly its ability to convert into a flat blanket. Its compact size and low weight make it suitable for backpacking and hiking where bulk is a concern. However, its insulation level does not reliably support its claimed four season rating, performing best in mild to cool conditions. Users anticipating colder temperatures will likely require substantial supplemental heat or additional layers. It is a great value for what it is. Read more
