Outperforms Clay in Every Way

L.M.December 10, 2025

There’s nothing I can think that any clay litter does better than this litter! (Not sponsored or incentivized in any way I just REALLY like this litter). Notable features, compared to clay litters: • Basically no dust - good for cats sensitive respiratory systems! My cat is black and white and he used to come out of his box looking gray from clay dust. • Clumps better • Stays fresh for longer -because it clumps better, you don’t end up with tiny pieces of pee clumps throughout the box that contribute to smell and needing to dump and wash the full box sooner • Lightweight - 20 lbs of this litter goes a lot longer way than 35 lb of clay litter I bought before this • Contains smell well, even stinky poops • Smell - no fragrances, I only notice any smell up very close, like within 1-2 feet. Earthy like you would expect of grass seed and very faint. • Tracking - yes, it does track but not nearly as bad as clay litters I used before this. My cat’s litter box is in my bathroom, and the little bit that isn’t caught by a litter mat is a lot less unpleasant to step on compared to clay litter granules, and is much easier to pick up with a hand vacuum or sweep up with a dustpan. I have a CatGuru litter mat that catches most of what comes out with my cat on his feet (highly recommend vs foam/rubber litter mats it’s easier to vacuum and catches more, and you can throw it in the laundry) Read more

UNSCENTED, excellent clumping & no noticeable dust, real-time and accumulated. REALLY. NO DUST.

Just My Opinion....November 29, 2023

In manufacturing, there is a desire for fast, high quality and cheap. You can only ever have 2 out of 3. Cat litter is like that, too: Clumping, tracking, dust. You can never have all 3. I gave this litter 5 stars because it gave me the 2 that I had to have: clumping, and no dust. And I don't mean "no dust" like the "99.9% dust free" that I see on litters that, when I stick my head in the pan to scoop, choke me, and make me wipe all surrounding surfaces to get that sticky non-dust off. I mean, "no dust" as in: - none in the air when I vigorously scoop (I get the faintest whiff of a grain-like scent, though, but it's a faint, natural, outdoor smell (this is UNSECNTED - yay!). - so close to none on the surrounding surfaces - even wiping the litter mat after a month had only a minor amount of dirt Previously, I have used "Dr Elsey's" and the walnut litters (usually combined). Both are great litters, and do their job, and I would love to use them if the box was in the garage, but not in the house. They clump well, track a bit, swear there is no dust, but my experience was dusty. Maybe my cat is a digger and a litter-shuffler (she is), and she will repeatedly go back and elaboratley mess around in the clean litter until someone cleans it. If your cat goes in, does its stuff, covers discreetly and gets out, they are probably fine. CAVEAT on the clumping: give it a few minutes. Try to scoop immediately and it is a sticky mess (but I think this is normal for all litters). Other reasons I love it: - UNSCENTED (healthier for me, healthier for my cats) - good, very faint, natural smell - unlikely to damage any hardwood floors (the litter consistency is more like flakes of uncooked cream-of-wheat than grits/sand) - vacuums up easily (I can't tell you how annoying it is to have the stick vacuum just push granules of tracked clumping litter around in front of the vacuum head as you try to clean it (I'm looking at you, "Dr Elsey's")! Not with this...just gets sucked right up). - no odor (okay, if my cat leaves a stinking bomb - nothing will work, not Poo-Pourri, Febreeze or a 14-year-old boy's dosage of Axe body spray, so I don't use that as a litter odor metric, ever...it's just got to go). But I stick my head into the top if the litter box enclosure and dig around, even after a month, no pee smell ever, no lingering poop smell (assuming none is waiting to be removed), smells fresh as the day I washed the box. - no rock formations cemented to the sides: "Dr Elsey's" was prone to this, but this litter almost seems to protect the box. Scoop stuff up and it rarely leaves anything stuck on the box. - less weird feeling on the hands: you know what I mean, that tacky/slimy feel on your fingers when you wash them after you get some the dust on them...guess because there is really virtually no dust. - I use a jumbo litter box https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075WX7BPD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 and shield, and I pour one bag of litter in at the beginning of the month. Occasionally, I have to add a bit more at the end of week 3, but I am more generous because I have a digger. PHOTOS: - photo into the litter box, lid removed - I wiped. the sides inside with the black cloth - "dust" on black cloth - I wiped the inside of the litter enclosure after 3 weeks, using a fleece cloth. - Tracked litter on litter mat - wet wipes from wiping litter mat after a month of use (there are two, because my scrubbing caused the wipes to shred) Read more

Do your lungs a favor! Smart Cat is smart for your cat!

L BuyerSeptember 21, 2024

Before I ever used Smart Cat, I pet sat for some beautiful rescue cats whose owner was a committed user of this product. It was highly recommended to me that if I ever got cats, this was the product I wanted to use. A few years later, I did just that and didn't hesitate to order the same product I'd used pet sitting. Several years later, the product quality was the same high quality as when I'd tried it the first time. I used it for a couple of years before Covid. Unfortunately, there came a point when we couldn't readily get it, so I shopped where I could and picked up a popular brand name clay version in a local grocery store. Bad news! I hadn't even considered the harm it could have done. In not too much time, my cat started wheezing and sneezing. I had never heard him sneeze previously and hadn't considered that it could have been the litter. After all, it's made for cat boxes! I'd also kept him as an indoor cat from the first day I found him. It wasn't too long before I also started coughing and feeling a dry scratchiness in my lungs and throat. One day, I went into the bathroom and saw a noticeable layer of what I thought was dust on the top of the tank and bathroom shelf. I'm generally very clean, so I got out my rags and started dusting. It wasn't dust. As I looked around the house, that "dust" wasn't anywhere else to be found - only in the bathroom where I kept the cat's litter box. I realized it was clay silt from the Covid kitty litter we'd picked up when we couldn't get Smart Cat. I'd picked up several jugs of it at the time, not knowing how long Covid would last. Cat litter is one of those things that you want to keep a good supply of on-hand! By that time I was able to order Smart Cat again, so I did right away and dumped the rest of the clay litter I'd picked up as soon as Smart Cat arrived. We had no more "dust" after that, and in less than a week, we were both back to normal. I will not use any other brand or type of cat litter except Pioneer Pet Smart Cat grass seed litter. It's a great product that keeps the cat's box odor-free. I clean the box after my cat's every use. I've been in people's homes before where you can smell "cat" as soon as you enter the door, but not with Smart Cat! I order the large value-sized bag. I pour it into a smaller pourable jug (using a funnel so it doesn't fly away) and keep it by his box. I pour the rest out of the bag into a 5-gallon bucket and with a snap-on lid on until we need to fill the jug again. So easy! When he goes potty, I scoop it right away into a small bag and tie it shut. At the end of the day, the bags go into the trash can outside. You would never know I have a cat! I will say that it does track a bit, but I keep a small, hand-sized brush and dustpan near the litter box. When I'm scooping, I just give the surrounding area a quick sweep. I also have one of those rubber litter-catching mats on the floor as he comes out of the box. It all helps to keep the tracking down. I also find that if I keep the box clean each time he goes, that I actually don’t use as much litter because I rarely need to empty the whole box. Consistent cleanliness saves on the cost! Pioneer Pet recently changed their packaging. I was concerned that I'd gotten the wrong product and called the company. They were very kind and explained the packaging change was for visual consistency when you see all of their products side-by-side. They guaranteed me that no changes had been made to the product. Peace of mind! I would highly recommend Smart Cat. I use about 2 - 4 bags/year depending on if I'm traveling or not. If so, then I'll take a larger jug and use that with a disposable litter box, covered with a plastic kitchen bag when not in use. I pull it in and out of hotel bathrooms without a fuss, and we've always left a clean room behind. No complaints! I would highly recommend Pioneer Pet Smart Cat grass seed cat litter! Read more
