Terrific buy

I've been using my Sony DVD player for a year now, almost daily, and I love it. I used to watch movies on my computer, but when I wanted to watch them on a TV set I went for a $29 DVD player at Target. It had no picture and audio options and died in less than two weeks. Sony's player is full of options to customize your viewing experience perfectly to any equipment setup you have. This is a sound investment and my prior, outstanding experience with Sony's customer service gives me a lot of peace of mind because I know that even if the thing dies in a few years, they will fix it or buy it back. works fine!

to the whiners with the noise problems, maybe you should read the directions first. i hooked it up properly and had no problems with the sound. it's a pretty decent sony product. i would have to concur that the loading time is pretty slow and sometimes irritating. Read more

Sony DVPNS55P

Good unit, able to play most every kind of CD and DVD media I've tried. Only two complaints: (1) It's very slow to load a disc after insertion, and (2) hard to control with the buttons on the player itself (note: the remote works better). Elaboration on (2): The unit's own buttons seem to only obey firm, definite key presses, not the light taps I'm accustomed to. Result: it frequently doesn't respond to one press of the "eject" button, but if I push it twice, in anticipation of it ignoring my first press, it will instead start to eject then rapidly close again. So sometimes the simple act of trying to put in a disc feels like a slapstick routine. But this unit was so cheap I figure I got what I paid for. Read more

Sony: not what it used to be, alas...

Bought this DVD player; it arrived defective - a loud buzzing on the audio channels. Sony tech support confirmed it's a defect, sent it back. Amazon was great, shipped a replacement immediately. The second one had the same defect. We unplugged a player from another room - no buzzing. What are the odds of it happening twice? Not high...unless it's a defect in the design or manufacturing line. My real problem is with Sony - they offered to replace, but wouldn't promise new (it may be refurbished) and wouldn't offer expidited shipping even on the second defective unit - weeks of waiting. So much for their commitment to quality! I returned #2 to Amazon and bought Toshiba. Works great. Read more

Disappointed and confused

Our disappointment in this product is based primarily on the zoom feature. When you zoom in/enlarge a picture, the size icon (+2, etc.) remains on the screen. We wanted to use this player on a small tv in the exercise room, and when you view letterboxed movies, it helps to be able to zoom in once or twice. None of the other DVD players we have owned have done this. It's hard to understand what sony was thinking when they created this feature. Read more

WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!!

I have made a blunder that makes me feel like an idiot. When I plugged the Red Audio Cable in, I accidently plugged it into the Red Component slot. Not knowing this, I heard a buzzing sound and got angry thinking that Sony has screwed me over. After 10 minutes of doing whatever to make it work, I actually read the labels and saw that I plugged the audio cable into the component red slot....WHAT A FOOL! However, I have to put the blame on the designers of this unit. By putting the red component slot directly below the white audio slot, you can confuse people as usually on most DVD units and TVs the red audio slot is directly below the white audio slot. Boy, I laughed my *** off after this. And I see one persons review somewhere here that states he had the same buzzing noise as me....he even got a replacement and it still did the noise.....I bet he plugged the audio cable into the component cable just as I did...LMAO. So if anyone plans on getting this player, make sure you plug the red audio cable in the correct slot! Read more

It Plays Everything Flawlessly Wthout Hanging or Skipping

I use Netflix, so the DVDs I watch are frequently scratched. My old DVD player would frequently skip or stop being able to read the DVDs. I tried cleaning the DVD player's reading head with a cleaning DVD disk. No help. It became very stressful for my wife and I to watch any movie, living in fear that half way through the movie, the DVD player would stop being able to read the DVD. So we bought the Sony DVPNS55P/S based on other reviews. The Sony has played everything we've put in it flawlessly. We're very pleased. Read more
