Delightful
TLDR; Squirrel With A Gun is a delightful third-person action/shooter game that is exactly as fun as its absurd title suggests. The controls on PS5 feel a little too sensitive and none of the available adjustments help very much, though you will mostly get used to them. The vehicles are particularly frustrating to control, but in the end they are all manageable. The violence in this game Looney Tunes style, where someone can take a grenade to the face and get right back up again. There is a minefield in one spot with an NPC guarding it. I managed to knock him into the minefield, and for the next 30 minutes, every time I happened to go near the minefield, I would see the NPC get up from a daze, take a couple steps and get blown up with another mine. The platforming bits rely on the enormously off-balance thrust to weight ratio of a 9 ounce rodent firing large caliber bullets. Pointed downward guns become rocket boosters. Its all pretty clever. The game does a minimum of hand-holding, but most of the puzzles are simple enough to figure out. Setting aside whatever misgivings parents may have over cartoon violence, I think most 8-10 year-Olds could complete the game. The campaign is fairly short, but consistent with its $30 price tag. Depending on skill, completion rate and whether you cheat and look up solutions online, I estimate the campaign to be between 4 and 7 hours hours. Even with its short length there are still a couple of memorable set-piece cutscenes and battles that will have you laughing out loud and running for your life. The game installs and plays completely from the disc, so no Internet required, and the physical game doesn't become a coaster some day. No politics or agendas detected, just good clean mayhem.
