Just what we were looking for to show off a set of recently purchased knives. As a woodworker myself I can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this. Even came with a screwdriver to assemble. Magnet is plenty strong to hold our knives. Packaging was "gift giving ready" and protected the wood finish well. Was a little hesitant about the price, but not now. Worth every penny. This thing holds a lot of knives. That's great, because I have quite a few. Both sides are magnetic, and the vertical board is thick enough to easily store knives on both sides. The magnets are very strong (almost too strong for my high surface area cleaver, which this thing really holds onto). My wife and I love it--so much cleaner and better for the knife edges than our old bamboo slot holder. It also holds more knives in less space. It even holds my kids' santoku and petty! I thought tipping over would be a concern, but it feels sturdy, and 3 months of use hasn't seen an incident yet. The trick is to pull the knives it holds onto strongest *upward* which does not create forces that could otherwise cause tipping. The build quality is excellent. It has accumulated a couple scratches, mostly from the kanji on my Japanese knives. I am unbothered, but if you expect it to look as flawless forever as the day you bought it, then a wooden product probably isn't optimal. Tools, not jewels! Pull through knife sharpeners are awful, and I literally covered this one over to prevent anyone from using it on my knives. I'd pay more for a version that doesn't have this "feature." The only other criticism I have is that it doesn't hold a 240mm gyotu very well. It works fine for my 210mm ones (8 inches), but if you have a 9 or 10 (or 12) inch chef knife / gyuto, this will still hold it, but it'll stick up with the blade above the top edge. In the attached photo, the 210 gyuto is on the left and does fine; the 240 gyuto is in the middle and sticks up. It works, but isn't optimal. All in all, I still think this thing deserves 5 stars, because despite a couple quibbles, it works so much better than any other solution I've found for compact storage of a large number of kitchen knives in a safe way that emphasizes ease of use. I was worried that the face would not fit all my knives; they had been perfect on the 24” bar that I left mounted when I left a rental. No worries, Mate! 10” chef blade just clears the stand base, I fit a couple of less used knives on the back, and the rest are neatly aligned. Stand doesn’t tip when knives removed - helps to “roll” the bigger blades off (tip to the side, then pull off). Strong magnet! Quality of wood, finish and fit are excellent. Took a mineral oil wipe nicely. Read more
This is a beautiful looking knife holder and it looks great in our kitchen. The quality seems great and I have no doubts that the magnet will hold onto the knives without issues. I would've preferred having a longer or wider holder, or one that maybe contained multiple pieces as I'm using this with one side against the wall -- but this could be mitigated by using both sides.
