We haven't used this specific item yet as we hadn't had the occasion to, nonetheless I'm giving a review and a rating because we have a lot of experience using this exact same product for many years, till it broke after many years of use and we have missed it since and would not settle for anything else! We (my wife and I) were so happily suprized to find the exact same product online (made by a different manufacturer), so I ordered one immediately. It arrived very quickly. It is the exact same slicer\grater that we had had for years (also of the same quality, with the exception of rubber suction feet rather than solid rubber feet), and has been in my wife's family for decades (her grandmother had an all metal one). This is truly an amazing product! It slices and grates even large amounts extremely quickly and easily with relatively little effort, and is quite easy to clean. I highly recommend this product! Update after first use: This product works as well as our previous one did. The plastic in this item seems to feel a bit softer, less hard than in our previous one, but I don't know if that would make it more, or less, prone to braking. The rubber suction feet is definately an improvement over the previous solid rubber feet. All-in-all, I remain with my overall five-star rating and previous recommendation of this product. Read more

Just got it about an hour ago! Very pleased with it. When I opened it, I thought "WHAT did I just buy?" It appeared rinky dink, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck. It does not have the appearance of being well built. But it is good enough to do the job, and does it *extremely* well! It is the BEST grater I've ever had. Now, to be honest, I only grated some cheese...but that is what I primarily needed/wanted it for. In 1985, Labor Day Weekend, I used a grater that may have been better or may not. My memory is foggy. But I think it was of the same design..spider legs, flat disk, handle to spin the disk. And if I remember correctly it was made by Salad Master, but it was not the current grater they have. The current one is like the "drum" graters; but the one I used did not have any hand protection, and I grated the block so low that the "owner" of the grater was sure I was going to cut myself. But I didn't. That is the only other grater that I've seen, including Cuisinart's 14-cup food processor grater, that may stand up to this one. (Just did some research, and it appears that SaladMaster never had a disk grater like this one. Regardless, this is wonderful!) Lawrence Read more

I honestly don't know how I ever got along without this product. Over the last several years I've taken up cooking as a hobby, and one of the first recipes I endeavored to perfect was old fashioned buttermilk biscuits. After lots of reading / research / unsatisfying attempts, one of the common denominators in the highest rated recipes was to use cold butter. Another was small pieces. But if you freeze a stick of butter, then try to cut it into small cubes, it's... well... hard! The butter. And cutting it. And keeping it cold while & after cubing it. This machine will easily take half a stick of butter & shred it in about 10-15 seconds. Shred it straight into your flour bowl, and you're ready to add your buttermilk in no time. Works fast, keeps the butter cold. I went 4 stars for ease of cleaning - it's not hard, but shredding butter does leave a small amount of residue. You do have to wash it in hot water to get it clean. Likewise with the cutting disc. It's not hard, but it's not just run it under the water & shake it off either. Three stars / suction - I struggled with this rating a little. I already stated I grate frozen butter straight into my mixing bowl, so the fold out metal legs & suction cup feet don't have anything to grip. In fact, they even get in the way a little. Not a product flaw, just the way I use it. I wish the metal legs were detachable just to jet them out of the way. But when grating cheese (pimento & cheese spread was another early project, nailed it!) the product really does not sit high enough off the counter to grate a lot of cheese while the product is stuck to the counter. Suction is OK (it may come loose occasionally) but you're moving it occasionally to clear way for more cheese. Ease of use - the handle of the product drops in to the slicing / grating blade simply, and is held in place by gravity only. If you try to lift the assembly by the handle, it will pull out, which also releases the cutting blade from the base. It's not a huge deal, you get used to it quickly & learn to work around it. But if anything, it's a tiny bit cumbersome. The handle is long enough to get plenty of leverage, and turns easily with hard cheeses or frozen butter. But the angle is a bit odd, just a little uncomfortable. Maybe a large part of this is using it on top of my mixing bowl rather than attached to the counter. I'll concede ease of use could be higher for those using this product in a more traditional manner. It's not hard to use, and it does work quickly. Just a bit cumbersome when used as I do. So, there are all my reasons for not giving this wonderful product five stars across the boards. I love it anyway! It makes quick work of shredding, is orders of magnitude faster than old style hand powered box style graters. Fast enough to clean, easy enough to use. And it appears to be sturdily made to last a long time. If I hadn't already bought one, 'd buy it today & be completely happy with the product. Read more

Winston Churchill remarked that Americans could be counted on to do the right thing -- after first trying everything else. So it is with me and purchases. As a vegan, I grate carrots daily (and then dress them with oil and vinegar and curry powder). When my department store electric food processor's grate blade disintegrated after a few years' heavy use, I first went online and found an absurdly cheap hand grater. It lasted two weeks. So I bought this. It is a joy to use -- very sturdy, elegantly simple and functional; and the quality of the grate is superior to what I have had before. I would encourage you to save yourself my comic false economies and choose this excellent product first. Read more
